World Whisky Day 2020: the whiskies and cocktails you need to try

WORLD Whisky Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May, meaning it's only a few days away.

Want to celebrate it properly? Stock up on a bottle or two from our list to enjoy a dram when the big day rolls around.

Whisky has a rich history dating back centuries, and producers have distinctive distillation and ageing techniques to provide plenty of variety.

So it makes sense that a special day – World Whisky Day, May 16 – is dedicated to the enjoyment of this much-loved drink.

But it can be easy to get lost with so many brands out there. So here are our top whisky choices and some top ideas for cocktails.

World Whisky Day is a great opportunity to learn to make one of the world's famous cocktails: a whisky sour.

And Scotch is as good a choice as any for this classic. You'll need:

  • 60ml Scotch whisky
  • 20ml sugar syrup
  • 25ml lemon juice
  • 20ml fresh egg white
  • 3 dashes of bitters
  • cubed ice

Method:

  1. Pour the whiskey, lemon juice, egg white and sugar syrup into the cocktail shaker.
  2. Cover and shake well without ice to emulsify the egg white.
  3. Open the shaker and fill with ice.
  4. Shake again until thoroughly chilled.
  5. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  6. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and lemon wedge.

Here's an easy and tasty way to serve your whiskey. You'll need:

  • 50ml Teeling Small Batch Whiskey
  • 150ml Ginger Ale
  • Lime

Method

  1. Add ice to a highball glass
  2. Pour in the whiskey
  3. Top with ginger ale
  4. Garnish with slice of lime

Japanese Whiskies

Japanese whiskies are now popular and their crafting resembles the Scottish style.
