How to make a classic Mojito – and the fruity variants you can try at home

Mojitos are a traditional Cuban highball cocktail, traditionally made of five ingredients. The popular summer drink is the perfect blend of herbaceous mint flavours, zesty freshness and rum.  Havana, Cuba is the birthplace of the Mojito – although no one is clear on when the delicious drink was first created.

There are several theories behind the origin of the name mojito.

One theory claims the name relates to mojo, a Cuban seasoning made from lime which is used to flavour dishes.

Another theory suggests the name Mojito is a derivative of mojadito – which is the Spanish word for “a little wet”.

However the task drink came out, Express.co.uk has a simple guide on how you can make a Mojito at home.

How to make a Mojito

What you’ll need:

  • 4cl white rum
  • 3cl fresh lime juice
  • 6 sprigs of mint
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (or 2cl of sugar syrup)
  • Soda water

Method:

Muddle mint leaves with sugar and lime juice. Add a splash of soda water and fill the glass with cracked ice.

Pour the rum and top with soda water. Garnish with sprig of mint leaves and lemon slice. Serve with straw.

The mojito is one of the most famous rum-based highballs.

But there are several versions you can try at home.

Virgin Mojito: A Mojito without alcohol

Cojito: Use coconut-flavoured rum

South Side: Made with gin instead of rum; while the South Side Fizz adds seltzer water.

Dirty Mojito: Use Gold rum instead of white rum and use raw sugar or demerara sugar.

Dark rum mojito: Calls for a dark rum to be used instead of white.

Mojito Blanco: Replace rum with tequila.

Or why not try a fruity alternative?
