Apple crumble is a delicious mix of sweet apples and warming crumbled topping which makes any rainy day seem better. The recipe for apple crumble is relatively simple, and can easily be made at home.
Crumbles first became popular in the UK during World War 2, when topping pies with the crumbled flour, sugar and butter mixture was an economical alternative to pastry.
The flour was made to go even further by adding breadcrumbs or oats to the mix and was a popular dessert due to the ease with which it is made.
Crumbles aren’t just apple, with peach, rhubarb, berries and cherries making an equally delicious dessert.
The dish can also be turned into a savoury one, using mince and replacing the sugar in the topping with cheese and oats.

If you want to make your own apple crumble – or any other sweet variant – at home, here is an easy recipe below.
Ingredients
Filling
- 450g apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1cm or half an inch pieces
- 50g brown sugar
- 1 tbsp plain flour
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon
Crumble
- 300g/10½oz plain flour, sieved
- pinch of salt
- 175g/6oz brown sugar
- 200g/7oz unsalted butter at room temperature, cubed, plus a little for greasing

Method
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
Place the flour, salt and sugar in a large bowl and mix well.
Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture.
Make sure to use your fingertips to rub, to avoid heating the butter with the warmth from the palms of your hands.
Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Place the fruit in a large bowl and sprinkle over the sugar, flour and cinnamon.
Stir well being careful not to break up the fruit.
Butter a 24cm or nine-inch ovenproof dish.
Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.
Bake in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling.
Serve with thick cream or custard, or even ice cream if you like.
