The meme cycle moves so quickly sometimes, one week it feels like everybody’s parroting ‘uncuh jams’ and before you know Adam Levine’s sexts are all over your timeline.
The most recent to hit our feeds, however, doesn’t need to be a flash in the pan – it could introduce you to your next signature drink.
It all started when House of the Dragon actor Emma D’Arcy was interviewed by HBO recently to promote the Game of Thrones prequel, chatting favourite tipples alongside co-star Olivia Cooke.
When Emma, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen in the show, was asked about their bar order of choice, they nonchalantly replied ‘negroni sbagliato… with prosecco in it,’ and the internet went into overdrive.
It’s undoubtedly the English actor’s sultry delivery that caused such a stir, with TikTok spin-offs and thirsty tweets galore being sparked as a result of HBO’s video.
And it’s not just lustful House of the Dragon fans talking about Emma’s sophisticated cocktail order either. Jokes about Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s favourite insult, jabroni, for example, have proven that it’s gone mainstream, while Google searches for the term have gone up 1080% over the last month alone.
I’ll take one of each. #houseofthedragon
Virality aside, though, the negroni sbagliato isn’t just fun to say, but a delicious way to level up the vermouth-based staple.
Sbagliato actually means ‘wrong’ in Italian, and in the context of the cocktail refers to the omission of gin in favour of prosecco, which wouldn’t normally feature in a classic negroni.
It’s great for those who don’t like gin, but also reduces the alcohol content of the drink making it perfect for sipping without getting sloshed.
You could also switch to non-alcoholic spirits and wine, turning it into a virgin cocktail with a grown-up flavour profile.
Here’s how to make a negroni sbagliato at home.
Ingredients
- 25ml Campari
- 25ml sweet vermouth
- 30ml prosecco
- Ice
- Orange slice for garnish
Method
Pour your Campari and vermouth into a highball glass and top with ice.
Slowly add your prosecco to the mix. If it’s fizzing up too much, pour down a long cocktail spoon or tilt the glass to calm the bubbles.
Stir, top will extra prosecco if you wish, and garnish with a fresh slice of orange to add a bit of spritz spirit to your tipple.
Now you can feel as fancy as Emma D’Arcy from the comfort of your own home.
