- Sainsbury’s sparks allergy fears as urgent recall is released
The alerts have been issued by the Food Standard Agency this week as consumers are warned of the potential risks of using these products.
The latest recalls include five products sold at Tesco, six sold at Sainsbury’s as well as one at Waitrose and selected products sold at Oxfam, according to the FSA.
The majority of the recalls come after health and safety fears emerged – from labelling errors to ingredients mix-ups.
The FSA is urging consumers to return any affected items to the point-of-sale for a full refund, with or without a receipt.
Doritos – product recall
The popular brand of crisps, Doritos, that is sold in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and other big-chain supermarkets, is currently being recalled by Walkers Snack Foods because of undeclared allergens found to be contained in the product.
The FSA stated: “Walkers Snack Foods is recalling Doritos Tangy Cheese as a precautionary measure because it contains soya which is not accurately declared on the label.
“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya.”
A statement on the FSA website reads: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya, do not eat it.”
The batch codes affected include 06 06 20 GBC 205 364, 06 06 20 GBC 205 363, 06 06 20 GBC 203 364, 06 06 20 GBC 203 363,06 06 20 GBC 202 364 and 06 06 20 GBC 202 363.
The affected packs are 180g in size and have a best before the date of June 6, 2020.
Walkers Snack Foods has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
Those who have bought the product are being urged not to eat the food to avoid risk.
Instead, they can return it to the store it was bought where they will be given a full refund for the item.
Waitrose – product recall
Waitrose is recalling Waitrose 2 Aberdeen Angus beef burgers with red wine & herbs because they contain wheat (gluten) which is not mentioned on the label.
This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.
The products affected are the Waitrose 2 Aberdeen Angus beef burgers with red wine & herbs 270g packs, all dates from December 15, 2019 up to and including January 21, 2020, have been affected.
The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
Happy Hounds dog food – product recall
Happy Hounds is recalling certain types of frozen raw dog food because salmonella has been found in the products.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals.
The product could, therefore, carry a potential risk because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.
According to the FSA, infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhoea.
