A food recall was issued for the beef burger products as they had undeclared ingredients.

The food item was found to contain wheat which could cause a serious problem for those with an allergy or intolerance.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) website said: “Waitrose is recalling Waitrose two Aberdeen Angus beef burgers with red wine & herbs because they contain wheat (gluten) which is not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.”

The affected product has the pack size of 270 grams and contains wheat, or gluten.

Any use by date between 15 December 2019 and 21 January 2020 have been affected.

The FSA website added: “This product contains wheat (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.”

No other Waitrose products are thought to be affected.

Food recalls are not often issued but something that should be taken seriously.

Those who have bought the product and have an intolerance are advised not to consume it.

Instead, they can return the item to a Waitrose store where they will be given a full refund.

Waitrose have contacted the relevant allergy support organisations who will tell their members about the recall.

Point-of-sale notices have also been issued to customers of the supermarket giant.

The notices explain why the product is being recalled and gives information on what customers should do if they have bought it.

When a problem is spotted with an item, it can be ‘recalled’ or ‘withdrawn’.

This warning will be issued by a supermarket when they are aware of the problem.

Withdrawn products will be taken off the shelves and a recall asks customers to return the affected item to store.

“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk,” The FSA website said.

“When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
