Waitrose is bringing back its sandwich platters, as well as other picnic items such as wraps and rolls. The platters are ideal to share with friends or colleagues in the park or at the office.

Waitrose stopped selling its sandwich platters at the end of March last year when the coronavirus pandemic was first announced.

The retailer later relaunched a reduced range at the end of June 2020, but did not bring everything back due to fewer people buying sandwiches and meal deals.

Now that more people are returning to the office, Waitrose hopes there will be an increase in Britons buying lunchtime items.

The retailer also anticipates a surge in social gatherings in the coming weeks as more lockdown restrictions are set to ease next Monday.

On May 17, up to 30 people will be allowed to meet up outdoors, and so it is likely there will be more picnics and parties.

Therefore, Waitrose is bringing back its full range of sandwiches this week, including new flavours.

Some of the sandwich fillings the retailer already offers include rare beef and horseradish, prawn mayo, chicken salad, and mature Cheddar ploughman’s.

It is not yet known what the new flavours will be.

As well as adding new flavours, Waitrose is updating its sandwich range by changing its packaging.

Like all other supermarkets in the UK, the food retailer is working hard to become more environmentally friendly by reducing its plastic use.

Therefore, the sandwich products will be relaunched with significantly less packaging.

The new range of sandwiches, rolls, and wraps will now contain 65 percent less packaging, which means that Waitrose will be saving 30 tonnes of single use plastic annually.

The plastic base underneath the sandwich platters has been replaced with cardboard, while the new sandwich boxes and film are fully recyclable.

Rebecca Neale, Waitrose Food to Go Product Developer, commented on the move.

She said: “It was really important to relaunch our sandwich platters with less packaging as they’ve traditionally been reliant on plastic, and we want to offer a more sustainable alternative as summer approaches, and we all entertain again.

“It’s our priority to reduce single-use plastic wherever we can as we approach our target of making all own-label packaging widely recycled, reusable or home compostable by 2023.”

In other Waitrose news, the supermarket has announced that it is ditching its two hour home delivery service and will instead concentrate on Deliveroo getting orders to customers quickly.

Waitrose began trialling deliveries with the app last September, and the grocer said it was almost quadrupling the number of shops it offers the Deliveroo service from.

Up to 400 jobs were also created in the shops where the offer was being introduced to fulfil orders ready to be collected and delivered by Deliveroo drivers.

The supermarket chain told customers on Monday that its home delivery service would end on May 28.

Waitrose said its service would finish at the end of the month “because Rapid and Deliveroo were operating in the same market with lots of overlap, so we’ve decided to stop Rapid and focus solely on our Deliveroo partnership”.

The supermarket added: “Through Deliveroo our customers can order our food for delivery in as little as 20 minutes, and we are also able to grow the service much faster than Rapid, to reach more customers in more areas.”
