While in lockdown, many of us have become master chefs, recreating dishes from our favourite restaurants or fast food chains, which have temporarily closed their doors.
Some, like McDonald’s, have reopened a few branches – but if you’re distraught because you don’t live near any of these and desperately need your McMuffin fill, you’re in luck.
Amira Arastesh, a journalist and social media influencer, has shared a recipe for the ultimate McDonald’s breakfast.
‘People always say “Oh I only eat McDonald’s when I’m drunk/sad/super hungry”,’ she tells us.
‘I am so completely unashamed to say I’m a fan and it hurts that they’re coming back without breakfast later this month.
‘So when I spotted a photo of a McMuffin replica on my friend Dan’s Instagram I decided to try it for myself – with a few tweaks.
‘Now I’ve just gotta figure out how to make a share box of nuggets and cheese melts.’
Recipe
- Sausage meat or store-bought sausages
- Sage
- Onion
- Hash browns
- English muffins
- Eggs
- American cheese
- Olive oil
Instructions
‘Start by removing the sausage meat from its casing,’ explains Amira.
‘Then chop the sage and onion and mix with the sausage meat, before rolling this into small balls.
‘Use the bottom of a bowl or plate to flatten the sausage meatballs into patties. Either grill it or pan fry (I tried one of each and have to say grilling and finishing it in the pan won).
‘As the sausage patties are grilling, also cook the hash browns in the grill (if they’re frozen) or pan fry if you’re fancy and make yours from scratch.
‘After that, fry the eggs. If you want a McDonald’s-style fried egg, you need a circular cooking mould.
‘I didn’t have any because that’s far too advanced and professional, but you can make one out of tin foil.
‘Roll out the tin foil and make sure you rip off enough to cover the diameter of one of your English muffins.
‘Then fold it over and over and over (about four or five times) until it is thin and stiff enough.
‘Then join the ends together by folding the foil over but making sure there’s no gap (the egg will escape if there is).
‘Back to cooking. Crack the egg directly in the pan and in the makeshift mould to keep it circular and as neat as possible.
‘Move the sausage patties to the pan for a final fry.
‘Finally, assemble! Muffin. American cheese. Sausage patty. Hash brown. Muffin.
‘No butter needed really as the juices from the patty are good enough.’
We’ll be adding this gem to our lockdown cooking list.
