September is a very important month in the gardening calendar, especially when it comes to preparing your garden for colder weather. However, this month is also a great time to plant some colour into your borders. Adding plants now will ensure you have colour, movement and texture throughout autumn.
A gardening expert for Homebase UK has also suggested that September is also the “ideal time” to fix your lawn.
In a YouTube video for Homebaseuk, the expert listed all the jobs you can do in your garden now.
They said: “September is a busy month in the garden.
“It’s an ideal time to give your lawns some TLC and there’s plenty you can do to keep your borders looking beautiful.
“It’s a great time to get your winter storage sorted, and a little forward planning now will help you to get the most from your garden next year.
“Repair and maintain your lawn ready for the winter months or plant a new lawn from seed.
“Keep colour in your borders with late summer blooms such as Michaelmas daisies and verbena plants in tones of purple to pink.
“Bring gentle movement and texture to your borders with ornamental grasses.

“Add echinacea and rudbeckia for interest right through the autumn.
“Collect seeds or cuttings from healthy plants ready to plant up next year.”
If you love watching your garden bloom in spring then now is the perfect time to start planting spring bulbs.
“Plant spring flowering bulbs now to enjoy next year,” the garden expert said.

Daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths can all be planted by the end of September.
Hardy summer-flowering bulbs like lilies, alliums and crocosmia can be planted in September and October.
However, tulips are best planted in November.
The Homebase gardening expert added: “If you have a pond, put a net over it before autumn leaves start to fall.
“Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting.
“Put a new shed in your garden ready for winter storage, or add some shelving to your new or existing shed so you can tidy away your summer pots and furniture.”
