With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many people will be looking forward to bouquets of freshly cut flowers. But while it can be tempting to stuff flowers straight into a vase, this could shorten their potential lifespan. Most cut flowers can last from seven to 12 days if they are cared for properly.
For those looking to make their fresh cut flowers last longer, Natalie Shaw, an expert from InterfloraUK, has shared her tips.
She said: “If you’ve been lucky enough to receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers, you’ll want to know how to care for them properly.
“I’m here to offer my advice on how best to look after your flowers.”
Most flowers will come wrapped in cellophane with a bubble of water at the bottom to keep the stumps hydrated.

Once the flowers have been delivered, you will need to choose an appropriate-sized vase.
“You will need to make sure that your vase is being thoroughly cleaned to kill off any bacteria,” she added.
Next, you will need to fill your vase full of fresh cold water.
It’s important when unwrapping the flowers that the florist’s tie is not “snipped”.

This will keep the bouquet’s shape in place.
Once the flowers are out of their packaging, it’s time to snip the stems.
Natalie said: “You need to cut your stems on an angle to create more surface area for the water to take.”
If the bouquet has flower food in it, you will need to give them an immediate feed.

Pop the feed into the water in the vase.
With the feed and water in the vase, the flowers are ready to be put in.
Natalie said it’s important to display the flowers in a place where they will thrive.
She said: “Display them somewhere where there’s no direct heat.
“After the second day, we recommend removing the flowers from the vase and adding fresh water.”
It’s also preferable to give the flowers another cut and more food.
Some experts suggest adding bleach to the vase to make flowers last longer.
Others suggest using a combination of bleach, sugar and water to stop bacteria growing and make the flowers last longer.
However, it’s best to do your research before placing potentially harmful chemicals in a vase with your flowers.
