Lawn care is extremely important all-year round, especially heading into the spring months. Appearing on ITV’s This Morning today, gardening expert Daisy Payne shared top jobs gardeners should be doing now, including preparing the lawn for the warmer months.
The expert explained: “Don’t be worried if your lawn looks a little bit rubbish at this time of year.
“It kind of goes to sleep over winter and it’s probably, well with all the rain I had yesterday, it’s starting to look a little bit sad.
“Grab yourself a rake, a nice lightweight one, and just gently rake it.
“This is called aerating your lawn and it just helps to bring it back to life in time for spring.
“It just helps to stimulate a bit of growth and it also helps to get rid of things that are sitting on top of your lawn that are stopping the light getting to it.”
Aerating the lawn can improve the grass’ water consumption and help to prevent waterlogging.
Lawns suffering from heavy foot traffic will benefit most from being aerated.
For those with moss appearing on the grass, a dedicated moss killer is advised to tackle the problem.

As well as dealing with moss, gardeners should be watching out for fungal patches too.
According to Angela Slater, gardening expert at Hayes Garden World, sometimes a lawn feeder can correct the issue.
Daisy added: “As soon as we start to get some sunshine, your lawn will really start to grow again so it will start to look green.
“Another little tip for you is that you can also get some fertiliser, this is a special one for this time of year.
“If you just lightly sprinkle it onto your lawn now or in the next couple of weeks, you’ll start to find that come spring and summer, you will have the greenest lawn on your street.”
Daisy advised gardeners to “put in the work now”.
She said: “It really makes a difference later in the year so it is worth giving a go.”
An early spring lawn fertiliser can be applied once between February and April, when the grass is starting to begin to grow again.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), feeding the lawn can also prevent weeds and moss from establishing.
They said: “Apply fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected.
“However, it’s important to know fertilisers use a lot of energy to make, so using the minimum required to keep your lawn in shape is best for the environment.”
With stormy weather forecasted for the UK, it is also important not to walk on the grass when it is too wet.
Walking on a lawn which is damp or wet can actually damage it.
Gardeners should wait until the water levels have completely subsided and it can be walked on without leaving wet footprints.
