Whether you’ve got lawn envy or simply want to advance your lawn-mowing skills, TikTok has plenty of unusual and creative ways to tackle that overgrown and tired looking patch of grass on your property. Finding these tricks of the trade can be a time-consuming task but Express.co.uk have handpicked the top hacks from TikTok users so you don’t have to.
Mow at different heights
Tiktok user @pharmdad is an American-born self proclaimed ‘lawn-care nut’ who posts regular videos of tips and tricks to achieve a perfect lawn.
In one of his recent DIY video hacks, which received a total of 1599 likes, the pharmacist shared his method for a well-striped lawn.
The TikTok user, who has 107.6k followers, makes sure he has the sun to the back of him when mowing his garden, making sure he doesn’t overlap too much when creating the stripes and always goes over them a second time.
His top tip is to mow at different heights by cutting your lawn taller and shorter in an alternating pattern to give that extra contrast when going for that striped lawn look.
Build your own lawn striper
A lawn striping pipe is a good add-on to your mover to add that extra pressure on your lawn when striping it.
They can be very expensive to buy, on average costing over £100 but TikTok user @tokfather32 has found a way to make your own for under £15.
According to the Ohio-based TikTok star, all you need for this lawn striping booster is five materials.
- 3 inch PVC pipe
- 2 PVC caps
- 2 eye hooks
- 2 split rings
- Gravel, small rocks or sand
In the video he said: “Here I have a three-inch pipe cut to the width of my mower, two eye hooks that were drilled the length of my falap on the back of my mower, I used a bolt to secure them on the inside of the pipe.
“I then filled the pipe with rock and then glued the punch outs to each end of the pipe.
“I then drilled two holes at each corner of the bottom part of the flap on my mower which if measured properly should be the same length as the eye hooks which I drilled into the pipe.
“I made the hole big enough to put these spring hooded clamps through it and then connected it to the pipe.”

Pay attention to the perimeter
One lawn care expert @peter_roberts01 posts regular videos of his lawn mowing hacks for a tidy presentable front garden.
His job has left him clued up on all things lawn maintenance and his top tips are a hit with his followers, gaining 23.8k likes on just one short mowing video.
The TikTok user who has 325.2k followers shared the importance of your lawns perimeter when looking for a top-tier result.
- Always trim the edges of your lawn first by going around the perimeter of the patch before heading into the centre
- Make your first stripe in the middle of the lawn
- Double cut your stripes
- Go around the edges once more with a leaf blower to get rid of any excess grass blades which may have blown onto patios or driveways when mowing
General lawn care tips
Mow your lawn regularly – regular trimming encourages the roots to spread, which will help to fill gaps and block out weeds.
According to Gardener’s World you should cut your lawn at least once a week in summer and once every two weeks during spring, autumn and warm winters.
Avoid excessively close mowing as it can weaken the grass, encouraging shallow rooting and making the lawn more susceptible to drought, weeds and moss.
The Royal Horticultural Society recommends using a mower with sharp blades for best results.
You can sharpen rotary blades yourself, but for sharpening a cylinder mower, you’re best to take it to a professional.
