‘Quick solution’ will boost your orchid’s humidity while avoiding ‘root rot’

Orchids are popular houseplants but they do have a reputation for being a little tricky to care for.

The reason orchids are so hard to look after is houseplant owners usually overwater them.

Overwatering orchids can lead to root rot which can eventually kill the plant.

Rather than guessing how often orchids need water, houseplant owners need to have a watering schedule in place.

If cared for properly, orchids can live for between 15 and 20 years with some species being able to bloom from two to three months.

Another important aspect of orchid care is humidity and temperature. Orchids like to be between 10C and 27C although most homes shouldn’t dip below 10C, even in the cooler months.

Now, Patty Willems, PR Manager of sustainable plant pot company, elho, has shared exclusively with Express.co.uk a “quick” solution to increase humidity and stop your orchid from “perishing”.

She said: “While it’s important to keep internal temperatures warm, be wary of dry heat from central heating, and equally be mindful of placing plants in direct line of chilly drafts.

“To increase humidity, spritzing your plant with a water mister is a quick solution, or you can create a humidity tray.

“To do this, take a shallow dish and add some pebbles to it, then add water and position your orchid on top of the pebbles.

“Just make sure the plant isn’t sitting directly in the water as this can cause root rot and ultimately your orchid could perish.”

Orchids love humidity and prefer daytime humidity of between 50 percent and 70 percent.

Orchid owners can use a humidifier if the room the orchid is in is too dry.

If orchids are kept in bathrooms where there’s more humidity, a dehumidifier may need to be used so they’re not exposed to too much humidity.
