Mia (Anna Samson) has recently been confronted with an unwelcome blast from the past as Matthew, (James Sweeny) Chloe’s (Sam Barrett) biological father, has shown up in the Bay demanding to meet his daughter. Much as she has tried to prevent it from happening, the pair have now connected and Mia is living her own personal nightmare as father and daughter begin to bond.
To make matters worse, the newcomer has driven a wedge between Chloe and Mia, as Chloe is furious that her mother tried to keep Matthew’s arrival from her and wants to know why Mia is so against them spending time together. When Mia can’t give her an answer, Chloe presumes that Mia must still have some grudge against Matthew, which is why she was never allowed to know her father.
Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) has been encouraging Mia to tell Chloe the truth, but Mia continues to refuse, saying that she doesn’t want her daughter to know she’s the product of a sexual assault.
She would rather Chloe hated her than have her whole existence and sense of self plunged into confusion and doubt. While Ari doesn’t want to hurt Chloe either, he thinks Mia is making a mistake.
To make matters worse, Mia discovers that Matthew gave Chloe several thousand dollars to pay off her half of the loan to Ryder (Lukas Radovich), but Chloe doesn’t see what the problem is. Later, Mia and Ari are furious to discover that Matthew is hanging out on their front lawn with his car parked nearby, waiting to pick up Chloe so they can go out.
They both confront Matthew, and Chloe’s attempts to mediate fall flat. Ari warns him to stay away, but Matthew says that Chloe is his daughter, and there’s nothing Ari can do about that. Seeing red, especially after spending several years bringing Chloe up as his own daughter, Ari snaps and punches Matthew in the jaw.
Mia is horrified, Chloe is disgusted…but Matthew is galvanised and simply tells Ari: ‘You, my friend, just made a very big mistake.’
