John (Shane Withington) has been going through a turbulent time lately as Marilyn (Emily Symons) has been housing the Paratas at their house – and he isn’t a fan of any of them, particularly after unearthing documents online which reveal Ari’s (Rob Kipa-Williams) criminal past.
However, Marilyn refuses to listen to any of the points John makes about them and he has been forced into the caravan park for the time being. Gemma (Bree Peters) tries to apologise to him when she runs into him in the Surf Club, but he isn’t having any of it.
In fact, John tells Gemma that she and her family have stolen his family away from him quickly becoming irate. Gemma realises this is her time to try and make peace with John, especially if she wants to reduce the impact her family is having on his marriage.
She manages to persuade him to have a drink with him in Salt, where he asks her if she knows what it’s like to lose everything. To his surprise, Gemma says she does – she is still grieving for the loss of her husband, and had to leave her old life behind.
John opens up about losing his own spouse, and says that he had a hard time with his son Jett (Will McDonald) in the aftermath of Gina (Sonia Todd) dying. The two find unexpected common ground over their losses and helping children through the process, and they agree to a fresh start. Gemma then tells Marilyn she thinks John is a good man. Will this be enough to convince her to start building bridges with him?
