Tarek El Moussa & Heather Rae Young Reveal Their New Home Has Flooded: 'Looks Like a War Zone'

Tarek El Moussa and Heather Rae Young have experienced a significant setback in the renovation of their new home in Newport Beach, Calif. — but they’re refusing to let the bad news keep them down.

On Thursday, the engaged Flip or Flop star, 39, and Selling Sunset real estate agent, 33, both took to Instagram to share that the home they purchased together in September and have been working on since, has flooded, leaving them with major damage.

“Wellllllll we haven’t had the best of luck with our new home,” Young began her post, which shows the couple holding hands in their now-worse-for-wear kitchen. “We had some major flooding and water got everywhere and they had to rip up the floors, ceiling and tons of other stuff!!”

She went on to say that the home looks like “a war zone” and that they are now “super super behind” on their original timeline for the reno.

Young also took to her Instagram Stories later in the day to inform fans that the flooding occurred because the home “had not been covered up properly” in the midst of the renovations, so water had poured in when it rained earlier in the week.

“Ugh, when it rains, it pours!” El Moussa captioned his post, sharing the same photo as his fiancée. “We are now way behind schedule and way over budget lol.”

But the home flipping expert is keeping his head up: “Over the years, I’ve learned…when life gives you lemons, you smile and make margaritas! I’m not letting this one get me down!”

Young shared a similar sentiment: “With so much stress we aren’t letting this bring us down. Eye on the prize & the prize is a perfect ocean view!!” she concluded her post.

The pair, who got engaged in July after a year of dating, have previously shared that the stunning view of the Pacific from the home’s rooftop terrace is what made them fall in love with the property.

“This is why we love this house: the ocean is right there,” El Moussa told his Instagram followers in late September, showing off the expansive outdoor space and the beach just a block away. He also shared that they had been working with a designer to completely redesign the terrace — removing an unsightly firepit and adding a Jacuzzi.

A representative for the couple previously told PEOPLE of the home, “Tarek originally bought it as a flip but then they decided to make it their new home," explaining that it will be El Moussa and Young's first project together. “They have a lot they want to do with it and the house needs some work so they are going to continue to live in their current home until the new home is ready."

The couple currently lives in a rental house, also in Newport Beach. They moved into that home in April after quickly selling El Moussa’s nearby "bachelor dad" pad — the first home that he bought for himself and his kids after his divorce from his ex-wife and Flip or Flop costar Christina Anstead.

El Moussa and Christina — who split publicly in December 2016 and finalized their divorce in January 2018 — share daughter Taylor Reese, 10, and son Brayden James, 5.

In mid-September, Christina revealed she and her second husband, Ant Anstead, had "made the difficult decision to separate" after less than two years of marriage.

Earlier this month, El Moussa appeared on an episode of PEOPLE's Reality Check, where he revealed that he and Young have begun firming up some of their wedding plans, including the location and size of the special event.

Asked about where the couple would say their "I dos," the HGTV star said they crossed Catalina Island, California — where the couple celebrated their one-year anniversary and got engaged — off their list.

"I can’t confirm where, but it was going to possibly be Catalina Island and it’s no longer gonna be Catalina Island, so stay tuned," he said, teasing that the event could take place out of the country.

El Moussa, who popped the question to the reality star on July 25, also said the two are going to "wait a little bit of time" so they are able to host more people safely at their wedding.

"We don’t want to have a super big wedding, but our small wedding is probably gonna be someone else’s big wedding, so we’ll see how things go," he said. "But we’re planning on doing it far enough out to where hopefully the pandemic settles down a little."
