The pitfalls of broadcasting with a live newsroom behind you? The camera doesn’t miss a thing…
BBC Breakfast stars Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were poised to launch into their next news item on school uniforms at 7:30am on Tuesday when they spotted an employee sprinting across the studio in the background behind them.
The mystery runner on the floor above, wearing jeans and a grey t-shirt, dashed into shot and ducked around the corner of the screen and out of shot.
However, as Kay pointed out, his impressive bolt had already been seen by millions of viewers at home.
Stifling laughter, BBC news broadcaster Kay turned to his co-host and said: ‘Did you see that? Somebody is obviously late for work this morning.’
Putting the run into runner? A member of staff was spotted sprinting on the floor above the BBC Breakfast studio this morning while Sally Nugent and Jon Kay were presenting the early morning show
Sally responded: ‘Yeah, somebody is hopefully bringing us a cup of tea Jon. Hopefully, that is what that is!’
The presenters enjoyed a giggle at the sighting before using it to link to their item on expensive school uniforms, with Sally joking: ‘It’s enough to make anyone run away as they can be very expensive…’
Posting the moment on his Twitter account, Kay told his 58,000 followers: ‘When you’re late for work and the UK is watching….’

Viewers speculated over exactly why the employee was so keen to get somewhere, with one writing: ‘Last night’s vindaloo kicking in…’
Another quipped: ‘When you send the whole document and not just the page to the printer.’
One viewer was simply impressed by the speed, saying: ‘He can run.’
The weekday show broadcasts from the BBC’s brand new multi-purpose studio, which was unveiled by Kay earlier this year.
The daily Sportsday programme, live bulletins for BBC One and BBC News, and BBC iPlayer’s Football News Show are also broadcast from the high-tech studio.
