It’s that time of year when the best metallic and shimmer eyeshadows really come into their own. With Christmas parties and festivities a-plenty, there’s nothing more glamorous than a pop of dazzling glitter to elevate your make-up.
And if you’re a regular TikTok scroller you’ve probably seen the sparkly eyeshadow that’s currently taking the social media app by storm: Urban Decay's 24/7 Moondust Shadow in the shade Space Cowboy. The hashtag #urbandecayspacecowboy has reached 5m views on the app and counting – and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of the best glitter eyeshadows thanks to its amped-up sparkle and staying power.
But there are plenty of options on the market, with something to suit every budget. From highly pigmented twinkles of colour to sheer washes of shine, here’s everything you need to know about wearing glitter on your eyes…
How to apply shimmery eyeshadow
Pick the right product
Shimmer shadows come in all shapes, colours and finishes. If you’re a first-timer or little nervous of glitter, try a cream or liquid formulation. They still give you the desired gleam but are simpler to use, as the creamy texture is easy to blend in. They also work best on less-than-firm lids, giving a diffused glow without settling into lines.
Powder formulations can look equally soft-focus, if they’re finely milled enough (check by swatching a little on your hand – you want an iridescent swoosh, not chunky flakes). “They’re easy to use and you get longer wear, easy blending, no creasing and true colour,” says celebrity make-up artist SJ Froom. Alternatively for a small swish of shimmer, simply switch your usual black eyeliner to one with a subtle slick of glitter.
Prime your lids
Applying a primer or a neutral eyeshadow to your lids prior to placement will help keep your look in place all night as it gives the glitter something to grab onto.
Eyes first
It's a habit to apply foundation as the first step in our make-up routines, but in this instance do your eyes first, in case of any fall-out from your eye make-up. Shake off any excess powder off the brush before applying to prevent further product drop, too. You can also use a cotton bud dipped in micellar water to clean away any glitter specks around your eyes and cheeks.
Ace your application
Rather than applying it all over the eye, start by applying the eyeshadow onto the middle of your lid. This will instantly give a highlighted effect that makes eyes look bigger. You can then build up with more glitter if you wish. Powders are best applied using a fluffy brush that allows you to blend well. For cream formulations, stick to fingers, for control.
