GONE are the days when you'll only find chocolate behind your advent calendar doors. Retailers are now offering a whole host of alternatives from marshmallows to cheese.

But with such a wide choice it's hard to know if you're getting good value, so to make it that bit easier for you we've rounded up which advent calendars are offering you the most for your money.

The best and worst value chocolate advent calendars

BEST VALUE

Ferrero Rocher's advent calendar comes with 25 doors, behind which you'll find an assortment of the chocolate treats.

Inside you'll find the iconic gold-wrapped chocolates as well as flavours including Cappuccino, Tenderly Dark and praline-filled Tenderly Biancoretti.

You'll be able to pick up the calendar in Debehams for £9, which works out at around 36p per individual chocolate.

Ferrero Rocher also sell a 24 piece gift tray for £7 in Tesco, so you could save around £2 for nearly the same amount of the chocolate treats.

However compared to other chocolate advent calendars we've looked at, this is one of the smallest savings we could find.

And you get the added treat of additional flavours.

WORST VALUE

If you're a fan of dark chocolate there's also Green & Black's which is on sale in Tesco.

Behind the 25 doors, you'll find a variety of dark chocolate treats from the Praline and Velvet Edition ranges.

According to Green & Black's these offer a smooth flavour without the bitter taste of dark chocolate.

Tesco is selling the 232g advent calendar for £10, but you could also pick up two full sized 90g bars from the Velvet Edition range for £1.79 each in Tesco.

This works out over £6 cheaper and you can choose your own flavour from six different varieties including mint and salted caramel.

The best and worst value sweet advent calendars

BEST VALUE

If sweets are more your thing, you could also chose a Haribo advent calendar.

The 24-door calendar contains individual mini packs of the sweets, as well as MAOAMs and festive-shaped jelly sweets.

You can pick up the sweet filled calendar in Tesco for £5 or order it online from Amazon for the same price.

But if you want more for money, Asda also sells 190g sharing sized bag of Haribo Starmix for just 90p.

For two of these bags at £1.80 you'll get 380g of sweets in comparison to the 300g calendar which costs £5.

WORST VALUE

Marshmallow fans will love the Naked Marshmallow Company's advent calendar which is returning this year.

The calendar counts all the way up to Christmas day, featuring six sweet flavours inside each door.

These include salted caramel, candy floss, strawberry cream and gingerbread for an extra festive twist.

If you want to get your hands on it, you can order it directly from the Naked Marshmallow company but it'll set you back £15.

There's also the option of adding in a toaster kit which includes a mini marshmallow toaster, skewers and a toasting instruction guide for £3.95.

You can usually buy a whole bag of marshmallows at a fairly cheap price, for example Asda sell a 200g bag for just 90p.

But if it's unique flavours you're looking for, this would make the perfect treat.

The best and worst value savoury advent calendars

BEST VALUE

For a savoury alternative, you can't go wrong with the cheese advent calendar, which features seven different varieties of cheese behind each door.

These include Applewood, Mature Cheddar, Edam, Jarlsberg, Red Leicester and for an extra festive twist there's two varieties of Wensleydale with cranberries and gingerbread.

It'll cost £10 in Sainsbury's and is slightly cheaper for £8 in Asda.

The calendar is made of a selection of Ilchester cheese but we've spotted that Sainsbury's also sells a Ilchester British Cheese selection, which contains 12 individually wrapped portions of cheese for £3.

So for the same number of portions you'd get in the 24-day calendar, it'd cost you a couple quid cheaper at £6.

WORST VALUE

By popular demand B&M has brought back its "Merry Pringles" advent calendar, which has 12 doors to countdown to Christmas.

Behind each door you'll find a 40g tub of Pringles in range of its popular flavours including original, salt and vinegar and sour cream.

Just like last year it costs £8, but if you want to save a couple of quid you could buy the mini sized tubs separately.

Each tub in the calendar works out at around 67p but Poundstretcher is currently selling them for 45p, so you could save around £2.60 if you buy them separetely.
