Bookies predict ‘coldest October ever’ with possibility of snow

Bookies believe we may be on course for the coldest October ever, despite the milder weather this week.

Ladbrokes has slashed the odds of the "coldest October ever" from 10/11 to 1/2.

Despite predictions for an Indian Summer this week – as sub-zero temperatures make way for 18C heat – temperatures could drop next weekend with frost and snow in northern parts of the UK, Met Office said.

The betting company believes the country could see record-breaking temperatures before the end of this month.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: "It's snow joke.

"We're expecting this to go down as the coldest October ever."

Craig Snell, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, told the Daily Star : "Between now and the end of the week, temperatures are actually running a little above average.

"While things will be a little drier throughout the week, we can expect rainier conditions by the weekend, with the milder air soon turning a bit colder.

"Overnight we could see a touch of frost, with that and the possibility of snow most likely in Scotland and Northern Ireland."

Snow has been forecast to hit Britain this month. Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden has warned of "snow after snow" this winter and said the first snow could fall as early as October.

Britain could be set to experience the coldest winter since 1963 .

Mr Madden said earlier this month: "October is now looking like it will turn out to be colder than average with more of a chance of something wintry setting in through the second half of the month," Mr Madden said.

"There is a strong chance of widespread frosts and the chance of snowfall which will set the scene for November.

"This will pave the way for what is shaping up to be a colder than average winter with some extreme cold weather events.
