So many timeless themes are wrapped up in this conclusion to a season that has turned the pretty village upside down. Homophobia, schoolyard bullying, sexual harassment in the workplace, violent gangs – depressingly these problems ravaging the English countryside in the 1950s haven’t gone away. Detective Geordie (Robson Green) and new priest, Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), confront all this and more as they investigate the death of a teddy boy.

As a response to the domestic violence epidemic, this practical, step-by-step guide for victims (as they are referred to in this UK program), is brilliant. Workers in this area, including a doctor, a policeman, and a refuge manager, explain the processes involved in exiting such a situation and how to minimise the considerable risks involved. Except for the policeman, none share personal stories of survival. Australia could well do with a local version of this vital program.

Even so, some of the confrontation scenes between various family members pack a powerful punch to the guts. Predictable it may be, but this is a moving and poignant tale of generational heartbreak and the liberating powers of forgiveness.
