In 1999 the Labour Government signed the sixth protocol of the European Convention of Human Rights, formally abolishing the death penalty for all UK crimes. We also reported how the Government was in panic stations over a crucial vote on the price and incomes policy.

29 years ago (1993) We told how Prime Minister John Major and Irish Taoiseach Albert Reynolds had paved the way for peace in Northern Ireland by signing the Joint Declaration of Peace.

The IRA didn’t reject the deal and would go on to declare a ceasefire in August 1994. Twenty-five years of the Troubles claimed over 3,000 lives.

38 years ago (1984) Mikhail Gorbachev became the first Soviet politician to visit the United Kingdom for 28 years.

The Kremlin’s second in command held talks with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher where they discussed curbing the arms race and better communication.
