Each week The National Lottery raises a staggering £30m for good causes across the country.
And to celebrate the huge impact it has had on UK life over the years, they are running #CelebrateNationalLottery25, a £2m fund giving people the chance to apply for funding of between £100 and £1,000 for an event or activity that brings their community together in 2020.
You’ll be amazed at what can be achieved when a small grant meets a really big imagination!
Primary school chair of governors and mum-of-two Rebecca Brookes applied for a small National Lottery grant to help take her school choir on the road and perform in local care homes and community centres. Here she explains why the project is hitting all the right notes…
“Bringing generations together to combat loneliness isn’t something that just benefits the elderly – children gain a lot from it too.
“Our primary school, Our Lady of Sorrows, is based in the village of Armthorpe, near Doncaster. Some students have already been paying visits to local care homes, and we decided to build on that with a community outreach programme. It’s been funded by a small grant from The National Lottery and centre stage is the school choir.
“The choir puts on performances in care homes and community centres where the charity Age Concern runs sessions. We launched it in October with a performance at Charles Court Residential Care Home.
“Seeing the children chatting to residents was great. Interacting with people with so much life experience is beneficial to them, and they’re gaining confidence from performing. Hopefully we’ve brought laughter and joy into the lives of residents, too.”
