Do 'healthier' Heinz Ketchups taste the same as the original?

HEALTHIER Heinz ketchup tastes almost as good as the original, according to a blind taste test.

Which? tested Heinz original alongside the versions with less sugar and salt to find out which was the most delicious.

The consumer organisation asked 100 people to rate, taste and compare the different versions.

Every participant ranked their preferences and scored the sauces on appearance, aroma, taste and texture.

While the popular original came out on top, the Heinz 50% Less Sugar & Salt tasted so similar than lots of people couldn't tell the difference.

In fact, the 60 per cent version scored exactly the same for taste, but slightly lower overall as fewer people ranked it as number one.

The option with no added sugar and salt fared worst, with the testers definitely spotting change in flavour.

It wasn’t judged to be as smooth or thick as the original, and the tasters didn’t think it looked as nice, but they did say it was richer and had a more authentic tomato flavour.

Here's how each ketchup fared:

  • Cost – £2.00 for 570g – buy now

This ketchup scored highest among the taste testers.

The panel praised it for its tanginess and sweetness and it also scored highly for its smooth and thick texture.

Of the three Heinz ketchups Which? tasted, this one has the least tomato in it – 148g per 100g of Original Heinz compared.

It also contained the most sugar (22.8g per 100g) and salt (1.8g per 100g).

Heinz 50% Less Sugar & Salt

  • Score – 74/100
  • Cost – £2 for 625g – buy now

This option had a higher tomato content than the original with 178g per 100g of ketchup.

As the name implies it also has half as much sugar (11g) and salt (0.9g) per 100g too.

Which? says that from a looks perspective it is identical to normal Heinz ketchup and it scored as highly on taste.

Definitely worth trying to see if you like it as much as the original.

  • Score – 68 per cent
  • Cost – £2.50 for 610g – buy now

When it came to the no added sugar and salt ketchup, the testers really started to notice the difference.

This version is certainly the best for you. It has the most tomato (200g per 100g ketchup), least salt (0.05 per 100g) and least sugar (4.4g per 100g).

Lots of the testers appreciated the extra tomato content saying it tasted more like real tomatoes.

Where it fell down was on the look and texture, with tasters saying it wasn't as smooth or thick as the original.
