How to spot a Zillennial – Gen Z and Millennial cuspers

Stuck between two worlds, Zillennials belong to both and neither, which makes them particularly hard to spot.

Depending on who you ask, Zillennials are people born between roughly 1992/3-1998 or 1990 – 2000… or 1996 – 2000. Whatever, nobody can 100% agree, but you get the picture.

TikTok has been enjoying trying to figure Zillennials out for years, and posters have come up with some very interesting takes on core Zillennial traits.

According to one poster called Zoe, whose username is @zozoakz and whose recent video on the subject has nearly 180,000 likes, one dead giveaway is straight-leg jeans.

Not wide, not skinny, not flare – just middle-of-the-road straight legs that sit right between Millennial and Gen Z trends.

Another one Zoe flags is the way they post on social media, explaining: ‘Most of their photos will be them with their friends at a cool place.’

And if they do post a pic that’s just of them, it’ll be one of them doing some kind of fun activity.

Again this sits smack in the middle of Millennial and Gen Z habits – the elders post selfies and the youngers ‘post just, like, blurry pictures of things’.

According to Jenna, another TikTok poster with the username @jennasingswan, there are even subgroups of Zillennial.

this sound embodies both Amanda & i lol #zillennials #late90s #themuses #nostalgia #genz #millennial

First there are Millenzials – people who, as Jenna puts it, are Facebook lovers, Disney adults, late-night show/sitcom watchers, and fans of 90s/00s nostalgia.

Then there’s Gen M – people who like true crime, pop culture/podcasts, and nitro cold brews.

Jenna also jokes that they’ve got ‘no will to live’ in the clip, which has over 30,000 likes at the time of writing.

zillenials are all just permanently angsty cause of this i guess #genz #millenial #zillennial #y2k #comedy #jokes #parents

It might sound pedantic, but we think introducing these micro-gens makes a lot of sense.

For starters, the exact years each generation starts and ends are a bit different depending on who you ask anyway.

For example, think tank the Resolution Foundation use 1981–2000 as the Millennial age range, which makes for a huge age gap between the oldest and youngest in the generation.

#greenscreen I believe the word is #zillennial ? #genz #2000kids #milenials

It’s widely accepted that the oldest Gen Zers are about in their mid-20s, and the youngest Millennials are just tipping into their late 20s.

But again, this depends on your source – if you go by the Resolution Foundation’s rules, the youngest Millennials are turning 23 this year.

Either way, en masse, surely scores of people in their early-late 20s generally have more in common with each other than people who are in their early 40s, so why not lump these middling years together?

Anyway, when you begin to consider the fact that time, in the modern sense, is just a capitalist construct primarily used to dictate when we work, rest and play, it all starts to feel a little arbitrary, doesn’t it?
