DEAR DEIDRE: MY son gave away the present I sent to my granddaughter. I was so hurt.
I’m 65 and live in Spain, so I send presents early. She is five. I would love to be with her for Christmas but am nursing my sick husband so I can’t get away.
I called my son to check he’d got the parcel and he said she had been allowed to open some presents early.
Apparently she already has the Disney dress I’d bought, so they gave it to another little girl.
He then ended the call before I could respond.
He’s 37 and busy but I think giving her gift away was a terrible thing to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: He may have been teaching her that giving away a duplicated present would be a kind thing to do. It teaches her about sharing.
But he should have realised you would be hurt. I think his embarrassment made him rush off the phone.
It isn’t worth upsetting a good relationship over this.
Explain later it felt hurtful and suggest in future he tells you what gift would be welcome.
