Justin Trudeau has announced the end of his 18-year marriage to Sophie Gregoire Trudeau today. He made the news public with a post on his Instagram account.
He wrote: “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate. As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and continue to build.”
Justin and Sophie met when they were children, as Sophie was a school friend of Justin’s younger brother. In 2003 they reconnected, when Trudeau would have been 31 and Sophie, who was a TV host, was 28.
In 2021 Trudeau opened up on the early days of his romance with Sophie. He told talk show host Julie Snyder he wasn’t “quick” with women in his youth. He implied that he was in a relationship when he met his future wife.
He said: “We took our time to make sure [she] was the right one and I was the right one. We were both in a bit of a complicated phase in our personal lives.

“When I met this girl I knew that this was something serious with enormous potential. I didn’t want to go too fast. I didn’t want to miss my chance. I had a few things in my life to sort out before I could focus just on her.”
The pair began dating a few months after they met, and got engaged in October 2004. They married on May 28, 2005, in a ceremony at Montreal’s Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church.
At the wedding, Sophie wore an ivory dress with gold embellishment, pearl earrings, and a long veil, carrying white roses. Trudeau wore a beige suit with satin detailing on the lapel. They drove away from the ceremony in Teudeau’s father’s 1959 Mercedes 300 SEL.
