Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, Prince William, 38, and their three children Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two, moved royal fans with a deeply emotional post to mark Mother’s Day. The tribute was shared via Kensington Palace on Twitter and Instagram and acknowledged those who may be mourning or missing loved ones this Mother’s Day.
The powerful message read: “This year Mother’s Day will be different once again.
“Many of us will be apart from our loved ones, but looking forward to a time in the not too distant future when we can give our mother a hug again.
“But for those experiencing bereavement, today may be particularly challenging.
“Each year on Mother’s Day, George, Charlotte and Louis make cards remembering their Granny, Diana, for William.
“Whatever your circumstances, we are thinking of you this Mother’s Day.”
The post was accompanied by three photos of the cards each of the Cambridge children had made for “Granny Diana.”
Prince George’s homemade card featured a hand-drawn landscape and read: “Dear Granny Diana, Happy Happy Mother’s Day.
“I love you very much and think of you always. Sending lots of love from George.”
Princess Charlotte’s card was decorated with a love heart and butterfly stickers and read: “Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on Mother’s Day.”
Charlotte’s message continued: “I love you very much papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte”.
While little Louis’s was decorated with a painted love heart and animal stickers and signed simply “from Louis”.
Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, when William was just 15 years old.
According to a language expert who has analysed the Kensington Palace Mother’s Day message, it was Kate who was behind the sweet post.
Language expert and author Judi James told Express.co.uk: “Mother’s Day can be such a bittersweet celebration for so many of us and the Cambridge family’s touching and empathetic post suggests an understanding of the variety of circumstances, especially during lockdown and especially for families like theirs who have lost a central maternal presence.”

She added: “The first line is factual and the brevity, plus the understated use of the word ‘different’ makes the reference to the restrictions of lockdown even more powerful.
“There is a sharing in the next words: ‘Many of us…’ and a sense of optimism with the idea of ‘looking forward to a time in the not too distant future when we can give our mother a hug again’.”
According to Judi, the tone of the post suggests it was put together by the Duchess rather than William.
The analyst said: “It is easy to see that this has been written by Kate and the words used to refer to bereavement underlines that as the terms become less personal and more speculative: ‘For those experiencing bereavement, today may be particularly challenging’ is a thought about others rather than a shared experience.”
Judi added: “After voicing that shared and empathetic view with the public, Kate’s own ‘other’ becomes clear though as she shows how she and the children help William cope with his grief for his mother.”
The expert claimed the Cambridge children’s messages are a “sweet” way for them to show support to William for whom Mother’s Day is likely to be a poignant milestone.
She said: “The words on the cards that Charlotte, George and Louis have made for their ‘granny Diana’ are so sweet and touching and although addressed to their grandmother they are clearly aimed at supporting William by showing how much a vital and central part of the emotions of the family she still is.”
