Ever wondered what the ridges on the bottom of your freezer are for?
A viral tweet, which was posted in 2019 but has been re-circulating again recently, provided an explanation.
It read: "SERIOUS QUESTION! How old were you when you found out the lines at the bottom of the freezer were made to stand meat trays up?"
Racking up nearly 11,000 retweets and 15,000 likes, Twitter went crazy for the freezer conspiracy.
Replies flooded in, with one user saying: "Don't let my momma see this she'll make me reorganise the freezer".
Another said: "Twitter teaches me something new everyday lol" – and someone quickly replied correcting them, noting: "*people learn something incorrect everyday".
While some users were fascinated by the revelation, saying that they're going to try it out for themselves, others weren't convinced.
Others had theories of their own, with one Twitter user noting: "I thought it was for circulation".
And another suggested it's to "keep stuff from getting stuck to the bottom of the freezer".
Thankfully, an expert has since waded into the debate.
A spokesperson from Appliances Online explained to News.com.au that it was actually to do with cold circulation.
Expert Colin Jones explained why freezers need ridges, commenting: "Without the ridges the temperature becomes humid which affects the food stored inside but the vents allow air to be pushed around the freezer to keep it cool and helping your food last longer."
He also explained that it helps items from getting stuck to the bottom of the freezer, making the food easier to remove.
So even though it is for cold circulation, you may find a second use to store your meat trays.
