Single dad, 35, sheds 11.5 stone to be healthy for his daughter after being kicked off a Disneyland rollercoaster because then safety bar wouldn’t close

  • Shaun Fulcher-Kay was kicked off the Finding Nemo rollercoaster at Disneyland
  • Single dad had ‘walk of shame’ as safety bar wouldn’t fit over his stomach
  • He shed an incredible 11 stone by ditching  daily McDonalds lunches for salads
  • Maintenance worker has since taken daughter Grace back to ride rollercoaster

A single dad has shed an incredible 11 and a half stone for his daughter after he was kicked off a rollercoaster with her because the safety bar wouldn’t fit over his stomach.

Shaun Fulcher-Kay, 35, vowed to turn his life around for his daughter Grace, nine, following the embarrassing incident during a family trip to Disneyland Paris in 2016.

The maintenance worker, from Forest Hill, London, weighed 28 stone at the time of the trip due to his 6,000 calories a day diet, which involved snacking on Big Macs, fry-ups and ham sandwiches between meals, and wore a 4XL t-shirt size.

He is pictured left, before his weight loss. Right: Shaun has now ditched his incessant snacking on junk food and limits to himself to 1,400 calories per day of salad vegetables, pasta and rice, which has allowed him to shrink his waistline from 56 inches to 36 inches

But thanks to the ‘lifesaving’ event four years ago and swapping double cheeseburgers for chicken salads, Shaun is now 11 stone 7lbs lighter, weighing in on the scales at just 16st 7lbs.

Today fitness fanatic Shaun runs 5km (3.1 miles) three times a week and celebrated his incredible weight loss in November last year by revisiting Disneyland and finally going on the Finding Nemo-inspired Crush’s Coaster ride with Grace – which left him in floods of happy tears.

The dad-of-one said: ‘My motivation to lose the weight has always been my daughter.

‘I want to be at her wedding and I’d probably be in a box by now if I hadn’t started losing the weight.

Breakfast: A full English Breakfast.

‘When I got thrown off the ride, I felt ashamed. It was a horrible experience, but it was also lifesaving.

‘The ride wouldn’t start because the bar wouldn’t go over my belly.

‘The staff tried to push it down, but I was too big. They pulled me off and I had to do a walk of shame.

‘Everybody was staring at me and I felt like a disappointment to myself and Grace because she wasn’t allowed on the ride without an adult.

‘I felt a lot of hatred towards myself.

‘After that I vowed to lose the weight and to go back to Disneyland with her once I was slimmer.

‘I went back in November 2019 with her weighing 18 stone and the anxiety was insane. I was shaking while we were in the queue.

‘When I sat on the ride and it started moving, I began crying. It reminded me of how much I’ve achieved.’

Shaun added he has always been big, but ballooned during his twenties through bingeing on crisps, biscuits and takeaway food to get himself through long shifts at work.

He joined his local Slimming World group at the end of 2016 following the breakdown of his seven-year marriage and quickly shed his excess pounds, weighing in five stone lighter by February the following year.

Shaun is hoping to shed his final half a stone by the end of the summer to reach his target weight of 16 stone and is now helping other people battle the bulge in his new role as a Slimming World consultant. He is pictured before his weight loss

However, work stress during this time caused him to relapse and by summer 2017 Shaun had ballooned back to just under his original weight by returning to his old ways of snacking on junk food.

It was only when he collapsed in front of daughter from chest pains during dinner in July the following year that he decided to reboot his weight loss journey, fearing he would die before her teens.

He said: ‘I used to eat ham sandwiches on the way to work, then get a fry-up for breakfast.

‘I would have a couple of burgers and chips for lunch and then I’d have another burger and more chips when I got home.

‘I’d often go to the 24-hour McDonalds in the middle of my shift and get a Big Mac, two cheeseburgers, a big pack of chips, 20 nuggets too.

‘And I’d be snacking nonstop on biscuits and crisps throughout the day.

‘Now I have mixed fruit with Muller Light yogurt for breakfast, a chicken salad for lunch and either another salad or something hot like chilli for dinner.

‘I still enjoy ham and I’ll snack on it, but on its own instead of in a sandwich.

Not all the effects of his weight loss have been so positive though, and he has been left with excess skin which the NHS has refused to surgically remove because it doesn’t hang down.

‘I used to have back pain and was constantly out of breath.

‘I would say I needed a break for my back pain, and I’d use it to catch my breath. I feel so much better now and the back pain has gone.’

Since shedding the pounds, 5ft 11in Shaun has gone down to a large T-shirt size and has taken to running 5km (3.1 mile) races, with the aim of completing a 10km (6.2 miles) or half marathon by the end of next year.

After reaching his target weight Shaun says he would consider paying for the pricey operation, which could set him back as much as £10,000 to have the skin removed from his arms, legs and stomach. He is pictured before his weight loss

He said: ‘I’m still conscious about taking my top off. I went on a lads holiday last year and I never did.

‘I toned myself up so the loose skin is slightly better, but surgery is the only way to get rid of it.

‘I’m not letting it get me down though.

‘I’ve got a tattoo sleeve representing my weight loss journey.

‘It’s a girl holding 12 balloons. The girl represents my daughter and 11 of the balloons are coloured in, representing the 11 stone I’ve lost.

‘One balloon is yet to be coloured in, but I’ll get it done once I’ve lost my final stone – it will show how far I’ve come.’
