Happy birthday, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor!
In honor of the young royal’s first birthday, we’re recounting his first year in photos. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex gave birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor at 5:26 a.m. on May 6, 2019. Archie weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and while reports had speculated that Meghan would give birth at home, Archie’s birth certificate revealed his birthplace had been Portland hospital in London, England, the same place where Sarah, Duchess of York gave birth to both her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York.
Prince Harry couldn’t stop smiling when he spoke to the press upon Archie’s arrival
After Meghan, Duchess of Sussex gave birth to Archie — at the time his name hadn’t been announced yet — the press eagerly waited to hear from new dad, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Absolutely beaming, Harry spoke to the media for a few minutes. He said Meghan and Archie were both doing well and called the experience of becoming a dad, “absolutely incredible.”
Archie made his debut with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on May 8, 2019
Two days after his arrival, the world saw Archie for the first time. Harry and Meghan introduced Archie to the public during a small photocall inside Windsor Castle. The Duke of Sussex carried Archie in his arms while Meghan walked at his side. Answering a few questions, the new parents shared they couldn’t decide who Archie looked like more.
And Meghan called being a parent “magic,” adding that Archie had “the sweetest temperament.”
Meghan and Harry also posted photos from Archie’s debut on Instagram.
Six days after Archie’s birth, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave the world a little glimpse of him yet again in a Mother’s Day Instagram post with a nod to Princess Diana, Harry’s late mother. Then again in June 2019, Archie made another appearance on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s official Instagram account. In honor of Father’s Day, they shared a sweet picture of a tiny Archie with his hand wrapped around Harry’s finger.
Aside from the posts in honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Meghan and Harry kept Archie away from the public eye. They held a private christening for him on July 6, 2019. After the event, the British royal family released a few photos.
He went to a polo match
Just days after his christening, Archie watched his dad play in a polo match. Meghan cheered on Harry while she held Archie. During a break from the game, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gushed over Archie.
Also at the polo match were Catherine, Duchess of Sussex and her and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Archie went to Africa with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
On their royal tour of Africa in the fall of 2019, Meghan and Harry brought Archie. Anxious to see more of their son, the public waited to see how he’d grown and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex didn’t disappoint. In South Africa, Archie made his first public appearance when Meghan and Harry introduced him to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
During the visit, Meghan and Harry revealed their nickname for Archie, “bubba.”
Archie was front and center on the family’s Christmas card
The world got to see Archie again in December 2019 when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a Christmas card featuring an adorable photo of the family of three.
Not long after fans got to see Archie yet again. An adorable photo of Harry holding Archie appeared in a video looking back on 2019.
Ahead of Archie’s first birthday, a representative confirmed Meghan and Harry would be giving the world a “rare glimpse” at the young royal. So, look out for a new picture of Archie soon!
