Mum turns rubbish filled garden into pretty space using bargain buys

We’ve been spending plenty of time in our gardens due to the coronavirus lockdown.

And, this means we’re noticing when they’re less than peaceful places to be.

Whether its unkempt plants, kids toys or a lack of lounge-ready furniture – Brits are looking to get their gardens up to scratch.

And one mum managed to do just that on a budget.

Kelly Jones, a lunchtime assistant, recently moved into a new home.

When she got there, she was shocked by the state of the rubbish-filled garden.

It was filled with broken toys and refuse and didn’t seem to have ever seen a lawnmower.

So, she set to work, with her three children, renovating her garden into a fun chill out space.

Kelly planted new bulbs and added accessories from B&M, Poundland, Tesco and Aldi.

Kelly, 36, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk : "I moved into this property in December just gone and was horrified with the mess in the front garden and back garden."

She continued: “I've been working really hard to make the garden presentable: it was full of mess, rubbish, dog faeces all over and in bags left by the last tenants, glass and so much more.

“We had to remove the rubbish.

“We had to dig the areas that are full of flowers and sift through an amazing amount of rubbish that was buried there, such as glass, bags full of rubbish and house bricks.

"We had to remove those and fill them with new topsoil. "

Kelly added: “We then bought new plants and big stones to try and achieve some colour."

"The children enjoyed planting – I had each child dig holes and plant each bulb or baby plant in the ground.”

Kelly and her kids, aged six, seven and 12 took the garden back to basics and then found bargain plants which were reduced at their local shops.

The mum said: “We brought a lot of garden stuff with us from the old house and transformed it into something we are very proud of."

Kelly noted: "In total I'd say I've spent no more than £20 on plants, £60 on stones, £65 on plastic turf and £250 on garden furniture.

"In the front, I spent no more than £40 on plants from Tesco, B&M, Aldi and Poundland.

“In total, for both, I’d say I spent about £450.”

That’s not a bad deal for a full garden refurbishment.

Kelly said that her new neighbours helped her out too by taking masses of rubbish to the tip and laying her fake grass.

The mum added: “All I'd say to anyone wanting to do what I've done is look at the bigger picture and have patience.

“All I saw was the beauty that could be achieved with a little help from my girls!”
