Pixar’s ‘Soul’ barely looks like a kids movie

Adults dissatisfied with their banal desk jobs. The un-romanticized, hurried streets of New York City. The presumed death of the main character. All of these traits that would seem more at home in a film by Richard Linklater are seen in the new trailer for Pixar’s “Soul,” which dropped Thursday.

The movie, which comes out June 19, 2020, is said to be about a musician named Joe (Jamie Foxx), who, after losing his passion for songs, finds his soul transported out of his body when he falls into a manhole. He turns into a Casper-esque specter, and another soul he meets must help him find his way back.

Ever since the release of “Up” 10 years ago, Pixar has had a preoccupation with tough life stories that bring on tears. Follow-ups such as “Toy Story 3” and originals such as “Inside Out” homed in on uniquely adult existential crises, only relayed by cute, plush characters that appealed to children. They’ve become famed for getting grown-ups to sob. “Soul” takes that formula one step further by making the main character not a tyke or a toy, but an adult who’s lost his sense of purpose.

We’ll see how kids react, considering they have not yet grasped the concept of purpose.
