Platinum Jubilee weekend might’ve been all about Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne. However, she wasn’t the only British royal celebrating a milestone. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, turned 1 while in the UK. Ahead, get details on Lili’s birthday party, from the guests and food to decorations and presents.
A ‘relaxed and casual’ first birthday party for Lili
The royal family celebrates birthdays in different ways. When it came to Lili’s first birthday party, Harry and Meghan focused on a laidback celebration according to The U.S. Sun.
“It was a lovely do and had everything you’d expect from a child’s birthday party,” one of the outlet’s “sources” said.
“But there was no formal entertainment,” they added. “The idea was for it to be very relaxed and casual, with people free to pop in and out as they wished.”
Lili’s first birthday party supposedly included staples such as cake and balloons plus “picnic-style snacks” and games.
A pink toy car proved to be a ‘very popular’ gift idea
Gifts for Lili’s first birthday were a major topic of discussion, the “sources” told The U.S. Sun. “As her first birthday is such a milestone, there was lots of discussion ahead of time about the presents that she would be given on the day,” they said.
While the “sources” didn’t share an exhaustive list of the gifts Lili might’ve received they did reveal one that “proved very popular.” A pink Volkswagen Beetle toy car from the UK department store Selfridges for £75 or $81.
Kids in the royal family were there to meet Lilibet for the first time
Who attended Lili’s first birthday party? According to the outlet, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hosted an “informal garden party” at Frogmore Cottage.
Located on the grounds of Windsor Castle, Frogmore Cottage used to be home to Harry, Meghan, and their now-3-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, before they moved to California in 2020.
The couple — and their kids — reportedly stayed at Frogmore Cottage, which was home to Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, until recently. So who was at Lili’s first birthday party? The U.S. Sun reported that a number of royal kids were expected.
Among them were Zara and Mike Tindall’s children, Mia, 8, Lena, 3, and Lucas, 1. Peter Phillips’ daughters, 11-year-old Savannah and 10-year-old Isla, were also expected at Lili’s party.
However, royal kids weren’t the only ones on the guest list. The outlet also reported Archie’s godfather, Charlie Van Straubenzee, was expected. As was his brother, Tom, who is one of Princess Charlotte’s godparents.
Although senior royals may not have been there for Lili’s first birthday party, Harry and Meghan’s daughter received well wishes online. Prince William and Kate Middleton wished Lili a happy birthday on Twitter and so did Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.
