The royal celebrations won't be minus one Prince Philip. Buckingham Palace confirmed that the queen's husband was discharged from London's King Edward VII Hospital early Christmas Eve. He spent four nights at the hospital to undergo a precautionary procedure for a "pre-existing condition," previous reports stated. Upon his release, Philip boarded a helicopter and headed to Norfolk, England, to attend holiday festivities with the queen and members of the royal family at Sandringham House.
"The Duke of Edinburgh has today left hospital after being discharged by his Doctor and is now back at Sandringham," the palace said in a statement. "His Royal Highness would like to thank everyone who sent their good wishes."
While the palace did give royal fans some insight into Philip's current health, it did not offer any more details about why he was admitted in the first place. The Associated Press notes that Prince Charles has made a comment. On Monday, he said, "When you get to that age, things don't work so well."
Though Philip is with his family at Sandringham, it's not clear whether or not he will be well enough to attend traditional church services on Christmas morning. In the past, the royals have exchanged small gifts on Christmas Eve and made a public appearance on Christmas day when they head to services at St. Mary Magdalene Church. Conventionally, the service is followed by a celebratory family lunch at Sandringham and a viewing of the queen's pre-recorded holiday message to Britain and the Commonwealth countries.
