Queen Elizabeth II has so far refused to sign off on an official statement highlighting the royal family’s love and concern for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the wake of their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to reports.
Buckingham Palace is expected to respond Tuesday to allegations of racism in a statement that Palace officials have already prepared, the Telegraph reported.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made several stunning claims in the sit down, including that Markle had felt suicidal but her pleas for help were ignored by courtiers and that a member of the royal family expressed concerns about the color of their unborn child’s skin.
The Queen, who has remained mum, was believed to want more time to consider her response to the tell-all chat, according to the London Times.
“There’s a lot people [who] want to say but no one wins with a tit-for-tat battle,” one insider said, The Sun reported.
Labour shadow cabinet ministers Diane Abbott and Jonathan Ashworth have both called for a response from Buckingham Palace.
“The Palace needs to come forward with a response — I think people would expect them to make a response,” Ashworth said, the Telegraph reported.
A senior royal source told the UK news outlet: “The institution needs to lead the response to this. What a sad, terrible morning.”
