Royal officials break silence over claim Queen will step aside for Charles at 95

Royal officials have broken their silence on speculation Prince Charles will effectively become King in two years.

The heir-to-the-throne, 71, has long been stepping up preparations to take the throne when the Queen , 93, dies.

It has previously been reported how Charles has been attending meetings of the Duchy of Lancaster – a £533million estate which provides income for the sovereign.

It has also been reported that there are plans for Charles and Camilla to move out of their current Clarence House home and into Buckingham Palace when the big day comes.

He has also accompanied his mum during the Queen's Speech during the state opening of parliament in recent years.

But long-running reports that Charles will be made a “king in all but name” when the Queen turns 95 in 2021 have recently resurfaced – and finally been debunked by those in the know, reports the Daily Star .

The fallout from the Prince Andrew crisis, over his friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, reportedly saw Charles turn “Shadow King” and take the reigns.

Charles reportedly advised the Queen to “effectively sack” Andrew, leading to him announcing last month he is stepping down from all his royal duties.

The move fuelled claims the Queen will trigger the “regency act” when she turns 95 and make Charles a “Prince Regent” – allowing him to be King in all but name.

The Prince would take over the Queen’s roles, while Her Majesty would remain Monarch so she can follow her promise to stay on the throne to her death.

This followed on from speculation in a book by veteran royal correspondent Robert Jobson, suggesting the Queen could pass on her duties as monarch when she reaches 95.

Royal officials have finally put an end to the question.

A Clarence House spokesman confirmed to the Daily Star that, not only are there no plans to make Charles a regent when the Queen turns 95, but at any age at all.

He said: “There are no plans for a transfer of responsibilities at 95 or any other age.”

Royal experts had also previously told us that the move was unlikely to happen, with Charles pretty much already playing the role of “Shadow King”.

Charlie Proctor, editor of Royal Central, previously told Daily Star Online: “There has long been a suggestion that when The Queen reaches 95, she will step down from public duties, just as her husband Prince Philip did.

“However, I can’t see this happening myself. In a few months time she turns 94, and shows absolutely no signs of wanting to retire.

“It is certainly true that Prince Charles has taken on a much greater royal role in recent years, most notably his duties at the State Opening of Parliament, and on Remembrance Sunday where he leads the nation in remembrance on behalf of his mother.

"(And) as the years go on, Charles will continue to have greater royal duties, taking over some key roles which Her Majesty can no longer fulfil.

“(But) I can’t see him becoming regent… he is certainly on the world’s longest apprenticeship!

“The increase in his workload in recent years is a sign that he is ready to become King.

“Likewise, Prince William is increasing his royal duties perhaps showing that he is capable of becoming Prince of Wales when the time comes.”
