IT’S nice to feed your feathered friends in winter – and I’ve found some great deals going cheep.
To encourage the birds to visit your garden and to help them survive the season, here’s how to feed them tasty treats on a budget.
DIG OUT A DISCOUNT: Look out for deals on bird feed.
Wilko has a two-for-£8 offer on its Peckish Peanut Easy Feeder (300g), usually £4.50.
MEAL DEAL: The Original Factory Shop has cut the price of its mealworm feed (500g) from £11.99 to £8.
This high-quality buy is a fantastic source of essential fat.
NEST PRICE: Argos has an offer on its stylish black metal bird feeder stake, complete with metal birds perched on either edge.
It’s now £7, down from £12.

FED AND WATERED: Remember to provide our feathered friends with fresh water too.
This is especially important in frosty periods, when ponds, puddles and other water sources may freeze over.
The Droplet Bird Waterer is reduced from £9.99 to £5.99 at coopersofstortford.co.uk.
WINDOW ON THE WORLD: Not having a garden doesn’t mean having to miss out.
Go online and order the Peckish Globe Window Bird Feeder Display for just £14.99 from hayesgardenworld.co.uk.
The feeder can be filled with seed, nuts, suet and mealworms, and is secured with two strong suction pads.
Elsewhere, Pets At Home has a simple tray-styled Window Wild Bird Feeder for £10.99.
TIME IT RIGHT: Only feed birds at the times of year when they most need it.
Prioritise the cold winter months.
NAME THAT TUNE: If you’re unsure of a birdsong, download the Chirp! or ChirpOMatic apps to help with identification.
Both cost £3.49.
Or try the RSPB’s free ID playlist of common birds, at rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/bird-songs/what-bird-is-that.
