Sophie, Countess of Wessex shock: Why she refuses to do what is ‘advised’ by Royal Family

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is the wife of Prince Edward and a full-time working royal. She regularly carries out official duties and could be set to take on more when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not working royals. Although Sophie is a key member of the family, she does not necessarily follow the lead of other royals.

The Countess has spoken before when at official events on behalf of the Queen.

In 2016, she also spoke out as she gave an interview with her husband, Prince Edward, to Sky News.

During the rare royal chat, Sophie shared an anecdote about her daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, 16, not realising her grandmother was Queen until she started school.

Analysing her speech during the interview James Bryce, CEO & Founder of gweek, revealed what this said about the royal.

He explained she appeared relaxed as she opened up on the personal family story.

James told Express.co.uk: “Relaxed, yet composed and alert she makes her points efficiently, and with natural confidence.

“She asserts herself; she reads her co-speakers well and works out where her most impactful contribution could be.”

Rather than following a rehearsed script, Sophie spoke naturally in response to the questions she was asked.

“She is unscripted, unrehearsed yet sufficiently planned in her mind, before she starts to speak,” James added.

“She engages with stories, and offers personal examples so that you can empathise with her. Her posture is relaxed, yet confident and assertive. She lets you see the real her.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they would take a “step back” from official royal duties and Sophie could jump in to cover them.

If she does take on more duties, James explained she could go against what is advised for such speeches.

He added: “gweek thinks that – should she increase her number of formal engagements – she will maintain her sense of agile, authentic communication.

“Also, that she will not recourse to scripts and practised speech, which is so often the advised method when speaking to large groups.

“You may be word perfect, but you’ll never connect naturally with people.”

By going against scripted speeches, James explained Sophie will be able to speak more organically.

Doing this will help the popular royal connect well with her audience.

The Countess has been part of the Royal Family since she married Prince Edward on 19 June 1999.

They have two children together, Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, Viscount Severn, 12.
