With 2019 quickly coming to a close, it’s time to wave goodbye to a decade full of chevron prints, geometric patterns, and millennial pink-splashed walls, and get Pin-spired by 2020’s predicted trends. The Pinterest 100 report was just released, and in it, it details the biggest trends we can expend next year, from throwing galaxy and astrology-themed parties and shopping an increased selection of hiking fashion to creating more work-friendly homes and decorating our homes with more internationally-inspired decor.
To determine the trends, Pinterest compared global search volumes from August 2017 through July 2018 to August 2018 through July 2019. Then, they identified 100 topics with significant search volumes and “consistent, upward growth” and grouped into 10 cultural themes and trends. Some of those major themes include the following:
Beyond binary
“People are looking for more gender-neutral options for both everyday needs and milestone events,” the Pinterest report states. Expect more parents choosing gender-neutral names, purchasing more unisex kid clothes, throwing gender-neutral parties, and more.
Conscious consumption
We’ll see a “push for more eco-friendly habits is changing how we live,” according to Pinterest. That includes people pursuing a low-waste living, including low-waste weddings, and shopping thrift stores for home decor and wedding dresses.
Finding balance
“Next year, people will be thinking about wellness in a more everyday way, as they look for easy habits to counter anxiety, stress and burnout,” Pinterest states. From social media detoxes and art therapy activities to implementing Feng shui decor and drinking more cucumber juice, more people will have self-care and wellness on the mind.
’90s return
According to Pinterest, next year, we’ll be living like it’s 1999 thanks to all the anticipated ’90s throwbacks and reboots. We’ll also see grunge fashion make its triumphant return (“90s fashion grunge” saw a nearly 300 percent increase in search), as well as all the ’90s accessories we once coveted, like shiny lip gloss and butterfly hair clips. And if you haven’t already seen scrunchies make appearances at stores like Urban Outfitters and H&M, where’ve you been?
Home hub
“Home is where the heart is. But now it’s also where your office is…and your gym…and maybe even your waterfall,” Pinterest states. That’s right, we’re spending a lot more time at home, so expect to see more products, clothing, and home additions, like indoor water fountains and coffee stations, that’ll help make living and working from home a far more comfortable and seamless experience.
Internationally inspired
From Spanish bathrooms and Indian living rooms to French antiques and Australian landscaping, more people are recreating their travel experiences “on their plates and on their walls.”
Pampered pets
Farm-to-table dog food? Dog patios? GOAT playhouses? Next year, pet owners are all about pampering their pets. In fact, according to Pinterest, pet pampering will reach an all-time high in 2020.
“Increasingly, millennials who might be delaying traditional milestones like marriage are turning to fur babies for companionship. It’s not just puppy love: In the UK, more than 50 percent of pet parents ages 19-38 said they’d rather cut expenses for themselves than cut back for their pets,” the report states.
Additional 2020 trends include more eco-conscious travel, more outdoor activity, and space-themed everything, including galaxy- and astrology-themed parties and the NASA logo embroidered and plastered onto pretty much all items of clothing.
While the low-waste trend may be our favorite predicted trend, we’re pretty excited to jump into a new decade that’s filled with spoiled pets, less stress and gender neutrality.
