Many rumors run rampant among Marvel fans that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But it wasn’t until the Marvel Cinematic Universe film premiered in Dec. 2021 that fans’ suspicions were confirmed. Now, Maguire is opening up about playing Peter Parker again and what it was like to be on the set.
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appeared in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Doctor Strange broke open the multiverse after botching a spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home. As a result, Spider-Man villains from other universes crossed over to the MCU. And, halfway through the film, fans discovered that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parkers also got sucked into the MCU.
Their characters went on to help Holland’s Spider-Man in his fight to save the villains from themselves before sending them back to their universes. Along the way, the three of them shared epic scenes that are undoubtedly a huge part of cinematic history.
Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield are the only actors to play Spider-Man on the big screen. And it’s clear that they had the time of their life making Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tobey Maguire discussed what it was like putting on the Spider-Man suit
During an interview with Deadline, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland gathered to discuss their experience on the Spider-Man: No Way Home set. And Maguire detailed the first time he tried on his suit for the movie.
“It was uncomfortable getting it on,” the actor shared. ‘And then it’s a goof, and then it also has a sort of power in a sense because it brings me back into that character. It really does. There’s so much affinity for this character. It means so much to so many people, that once the goofiness of being in lycra or spandex goes away, you’re like, ‘Oh wow. This is cool. This is a responsibility but a blessing, like something that I get to do that I’m grateful for.’”
Maguire added, “Honestly being with [Garfield and Holland], it really was just a much, much richer experience than I anticipated or that I could really even express in words.”
“I was just like sitting in gratitude every day, which is not always the case when you’re working on something,” Maguire concluded. “Even just from the standpoint of trying to figure out what you’re doing. And it wasn’t without its challenges, but it all just unfolded the way it needed to. It had a sense of this kind of destiny to it as well, so I guess the suit was the doorway to that.”
Perhaps fans will get to see Tobey Maguire put the Spider-Man suit on again in the future. But that’s a story for another day.
The actor reveals why he signed on for the film
While speaking with Deadline, Tobey Maguire disclosed how Marvel and Sony convinced him to get involved with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant, I think, to Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige] was apparent,” he said. “And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don’t know, I just wanted to join that.”
Maguire added, “And I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, ‘Well, what are we going to do?’ And that was a bit mysterious.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tobey Maguire, is now playing in theaters.
