LONG car journeys can be a nightmare – especially with impatient kids in tow.
And with many of us planning staycations this year, the roads will be extra busy.
Thankfully, The Sun’s Hols from £9.50 is back today — which can save you extra cash before you even start your drive (see our pull-out). And here are some cheap and cheerful ways to make your journeys fun . . .
Be ’appy: Download free apps to make sure children are kept occupied. Road Trip Travel Games includes 11 games, including Spot It and memory word challenges. Adults can keep track of scores, which makes it more interactive and fun.
Snack time: Packed lunches will save money on sit-down stops on the way, so start by stocking up. Keep drinks cool in a stainless steel bottle. Reusable bottles from S’well and Chilly are my favourite, but they cost around £20 each. Instead, head to Groupon, where you can get a similar one for just £6.50. You can get refills at service stations — and you could always keep squash in the car if your kids prefer fruity drinks.
I’m a big fan of Robinsons Squash’d mini concentrated bottles, £1.50 down from £2 at Tesco. Keep some in the car and add a squeeze for flavoured drinks that stop kids begging you to buy them a Fruit Shoot.
Sitting pretty: Encourage the children to get crafty with some crayons and a car “play tray”. Amazon’s travel tray, £17.99, goes over laps and provides a great surface to scribble and play on without a mess. But I found a similar one on eBay for £5.99 with free postage — so get hunting.
Fuel it: Saving on petrol is a big one. I bang on about PetrolPrices.co.uk (which tells you where the cheapest petrol is in your area) because it really can add up to a big saving if you fill up early for less. Driving at a steady speed also slows down consumption.
