At the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown, supermarkets had to update how they operate to keep up with demand.

Social distancing rules meant that fewer customers were allowed to shop at once and there were long queues outside many stores.

Some supermarket chains introduced separate opening times specifically for vulnerable customers and NHS workers.

However, when you can shop has been updated in many major supermarkets.

Tesco

Opening hours in Tesco were previously changed to allow time to restock shelves.

These have now been extended in Express and Metro stores.

Those branches have returned to their normal opening hours, which is often from 6am to 11pm.

Elderly customers can also shop priority access between 9am and 10am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Asda

Asda has also extended opening hours by two hours in many of its branches.

Most stores are now open between 7am and 12am Monday to Saturday, with standard opening hours on Sunday.

NHS staff are allowed to skip queues in large branches between 8am and 9am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Sainsbury’s

While shopping times were cut at the beginning of the lockdown, these have now been extended.

Sainsbury’s website states: “To reduce queuing times both inside and outside our stores we have been extending our opening hours.

“The majority of our supermarkets are now open from 07.00 to 22.00 and we encourage you to visit our stores throughout the day to avoid queues when stores open in the morning.”

NHS workers and carers can get priority entry from 7.30am to 8am Monday to Saturday.

Elderly and vulnerable customers can skip queues between 8am and 9am Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Marks & Spencer

If shopping at an M&S Foodhall, elderly customers will get priority access in the mornings.

A M&S statement read: “M&S will help ensure its older and more vulnerable customers can access the food and products they need by reserving the first hour of trading for them at all of its owned stores.”

Morrisons

After temporarily reducing opening hours, these have been changed again.

The majority of stores are open from 7am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, with shops opening between 9.30am and 4pm on Sundays.

NHS staff can browse between 6am and 7am on Monday to Saturday.
