Helena Bonham Carter may not be a member of the royal family, but she has some pretty solid advice for one of them. Carter, who plays Princess Margaret in The Crown, shared some words of wisdom for Meghan Markle, who has faced some intense media scrutiny over the past year.
The press has been pretty unkind to Markle
During an interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Markle shared some of what she’s experienced by living life in the spotlight.
She shared: “Any woman, especially when they are pregnant, you are really vulnerable, so that was made really challenging. And then whenyou have a newborn, and especially as a woman, it is a lot.”
She called it “a very real thing to be going through behind-the-scenes” and when interviewer Tom Bradby asked her if “it’s really been a struggle,” the duchess responded, “Yes.”
Carter has some advice for the duchess
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, a caller asked the actress for her opinion about the “negative press and treatment that Meghan Markle has been recently getting.”
Carter herself knows what it’slike to have negative things written about her and said she wished that theduchess “wouldn’t have to” pay attention to the scrutiny and offered up some ofwhat she’s learned about dealing withit.
Carter shared: “I don’t pay attention to it and I wish shewouldn’t have to. I feel like there’s just so much. It’s just all too much. Itmust be really hard for her not to.”
She added: “All I’d say to her is as soon as you become well known and in the public domain, you have to kind of accept that, possibly… all that people think of you and write about you and whatever, that’s about them and it’s not really about her.”
“Why let the stranger — that was the most important or useful thing that somebody told me — [why put] your self-esteem in the hands of strangers?,” Carter noted.
Carter further drew a comparison to the suggestions she gets for the royal role she plays, noting: “It’s the same thing with Margaret and it’s really interesting playing her, that so many people keep giving me an opinion on every single part of the role. You didn’t meet them. So everyone feels that they’re an authority and of course, unless you’ve met the person, don’t even voice an opinion.”
Carter once had a very bold request for Prince William
The actress was also asked about the story that she once drunkenly asked Prince William if he would be her daughter Nell’s godfather. Back in 2014, People reported that Carter shared: “I got very drunk at one point, and I was determined to ask him to be a godfather to my daughter. He quite wisely said ‘no.’ ”
During her interview on Watch What Happens Live, she retold the story, including the detail that Prince William “wasn’t totally sober himself.”
She shared how she was “enough drunk not to drink anymore” at the time she asked if William would be interested in the gig. She noted: “The thing is, I’d spent all my friends as godparents on my first child, so [my son] Billy had eleven godparents. I thought I could make up for Nell, who suddenly came along, and then we didn’t have any [potential godparents] left. And I thought, if I went for Prince William that would cover it you know.”
Carter shared his kind enough response, explaining, “He just said, ‘You don’t want me to be godfather to your child.’ And I left and then obviously, it didn’t work out… funnily enough.”
