We work at Toby Carvery – nine things we wish we could tell customers but aren't allowed to | The Sun

WORKERS at Toby Carvery have revealed the nine things they want to reveal to diners but can't.

The chain's staff have lifted the lid on the pros and cons of working at the popular roast dinner spot.

Toby Carvery, a prime spot for a bit of Sunday lunch, boasts over 150 locations around the UK.

It employs hundreds of workers and each have their own secrets to tell about their time spent serving customers.

According to the Daily Star, there are the nine things in particular employees would love to tell diners.

Some are more eye-opening than others, and some might make you want to pick up a job application on your next visit.

What time does Toby Carvery stop serving breakfast?

1. We do get free food

Getting free food is arguably one of the biggest perks of the job at any restaurant or cafe.

At Toby Carvery especially you'd be able to fill your boots with roasties, stuffing and mac 'n' cheese.

A 33% discount is available across pub sites but some workers have revealed they even get a full meal without spending a penny.

It means that workers looking to save a bit of cash can fill up on grub instead of eating out or packing a lunch for their shift.

2. We say sorry hundreds of times per shift

Something staff at Toby Carvery do a lot is apologise, usually as they're weaving through the hoards of customers queuing for their Sunday roast.

Of course weekdays are just as busy so saying sorry dozens of times an hour has become a regular occurrence for many.

Some workers did make a point of asking that eager diners did leave a tad more space when they're stood around inside the pubs.

This makes it a bit easier for staff as they're busy clearing your plates.

3. If you can refill your own drinks, do it

Carvery employees also pointed out that the free-bottomless drinks can be refilled by punters themselves.

They slammed customers who call over the workers regularly to get their fizzy tipples filled up.

Instead you can head over to the refill station and do it yourself.

In fact it's actually a great way to save some cash too because the refills are great value for money – especially if you're getting three or four drinks a meal.

4. It’s all gravy

Workers also warned that if you work in a Toby Carvery you need to be prepared to stink a little.

The chain's signature gravy is of course a staple of any roast dinner but it can leave you with a bit of stench once you've been around it all shift.

Some of the employees said that there's been several occasions where they've got home at the end of the day and they stink of the stuff.

Of course to some people this might not be the worst thing in the world.

5. Our feet are gross

Now this one isn't specific to just Toby Carvery employees, it's something that will be familiar to all hospitality staff.

Working all day really can take its toll on your, especially on your feet, workers warned.

Employees are required to look smart in nice shoes when they're on shift, which inevitably means tough soles.

This of course leads to sore feet and blisters, leading some staff to say they can't wear sandals in the summer.

Not only that but bruises are also part of grind too, often left from carrying heavy plates all day.

6. It's hard to stay slim

If you're a fitness fanatic, working at Toby Carvery might not be for you.

Running around all day serving customers isn't quite enough, especially when workers are surrounding by the delicious smells of roasted meats and gravy all day.

Some employees have said that working at the chain has been detrimental to their waistlines.

Even scent is enough to ignite their appetites when they get home.

7. Running out of meat can be a good thing

Another thing staff are thinking is that customers fill their boots with meats to the point where supplies run low.

That's because when branches run out of the chicken, beef or ham, staff can sometimes leave early.

So if you ever feel guilty for bleeding the carvery station dry, chances are staff aren't too fussed.

8. Staff discount makes us VERY popular

If you're considering applying for a job at the chain, discounts available for workers tend to make them pretty popular.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't want to get a reduction on their Sunday roast.

Friends and family can also get a third off when they're with an employed member of staff.

This means that bagging yourself a job could save you some cash for family occasions too – which is a win-win.

9. Don’t forget to tip

Perhaps a quite obvious "secret" is that workers love it when you tip.

Every little helps and staff are trying their best to keep everything in tip-top condition for you.

Whether it's cleaning up after you're done or keeping a constant stream of veg and sides available at the carvery station they're working hard.

Particularly on a busy Sunday afternoon, employees implore customers to spare a thought for them as they're paying up their bills.
