'Nomadic raves' are popping up around the world – these are the ones to visit

At the end of this week, if you happen to look closely at the snow-capped mountain backdrop of Iceland’s Westfjords, you might spot a glitterball sparkling on to the glaciers.

Tune in and you could hear a choice New York disco cut, too.

A fishing village community hall in Iceland might not be the obvious location for a 1970s-style disco but this club night is a roving two-night stand from Detour Discotheque (tickets £30), breezing into the settlement of Thingeyri (population: 326) on April 29 and 30 with DJs Rahaan, Hermigervill and Norsicaa, then flying to a new location – with a new line-up – next year.

‘It’s a roaming nightclub powered by community spirit,’ says organiser Jonny Ensall, who had the idea in 2018 when his flight home from Iceland was delayed and he passed the downtime at a Hjónaball – a couples’ dance – at the local hall.

‘Thingeyri is an unreal location and one of the last places you’d expect to find a nightclub. We’re attempting to recreate the atmosphere of legendary NYC parties like The Loft, where everyone was welcome and the dancing went on all night long.’

This Arctic rave-up is not the only event on the move this year. With the world out of hibernation, a host of pop-up parties, festivals and feasts are planned but with a twist – when the last beer can has been swept up, they set off for pastures new, for a knees-up in unexpected places.

Take Parisian party-starters We Are The Oracle. Since 2012 they have been throwing theatrical happenings in the French capital and throughout Europe.

Founder Foulques Jubert is planning an adventure this year, taking guests from Paris to Egypt or Jordan.

Ideas are being sketched out but details will be revealed on the website soon.

Elsewhere, Glastonbury’s fan-favourite tent, Beat Hotel, is spreading its wings, living by beat poet Jack Kerouac’s words: ‘There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.’

The nomadic event packed up its tent from Somerset and jetted to Marrakech in 2019, and is heading to Ibiza this summer – watch out for an announcement on its Insta (@beat_hotel).

Previous artists include Jamie xx and Nabihah Iqbal. Keeping with Ibiza, the island boasts one of Europe’s best pop-up supperclubs.

Follow the dappled fairy lights and the giant ‘BAR’ sign off a dusty path to a beautiful one-off banquet cooked by chef James Knight.

Since 2017, The Last Supper Club Ibiza has hosted decadent al fresco evenings of food, drink and music, popping up in secret locations such as an orchard, a pine-scented forest and the top of a cliff.

Each dinner has its own theme – for example, a Diwali feast had mesmerising Bollywood dancers performing under starry skies.

Their philosophy is, ‘No two events are the same but they’re always a magical night to remember.’

It’s an ethos that links this new wave of parties that just can’t sit still.
