Tripadvisor has named the top trending international destinations – the fastest-growing holiday hotspots year on year in terms of popularity – for Brits. Hong Kong (above) takes the top spot
The index has found that over three-quarters (77 per cent) of UK travellers are planning to head off on autumn breaks in search of some last-minute sun, and 85 per cent of those are planning one to two trips, which is slightly above the global average of 81 per cent.
Forty per cent are just planning to travel within the UK, while 60 per cent are plotting an international trip.
Amid rising living costs, 34 per cent of Brits surveyed are looking to take advantage of off-season discounts, with affordability (67 per cent) almost twice as important as other factors when trip planning this period.
Over a quarter (36 per cent) of Brits said macroeconomic factors will impact their holiday decisions, with millennials and Gen Zers most likely to alter travel plans for financial reasons.
Despite this, almost half (48 per cent) of Brits are planning to travel the same amount as this time last year and two in five (43 per cent) are planning to travel more. Over half (51 per cent) are planning to spend more on autumn travel this year, and another two in five (41 per cent) will match last year’s spend, Tripadvisor reveals.

The biggest influence for Brits when it comes to choosing where to travel is recommendations from family and friends at 37 per cent, followed by online search (32 per cent) and travel review sites (24 per cent) – which are used significantly more by millennials.
When it comes to picking holiday dates, price (47 per cent) and weather (35 per cent) are bigger motivators than work schedules (30 per cent) and school holidays (30 per cent), Tripadvisor says.
The most popular holiday type for Brits is a trip themed around culture and sightseeing (32 per cent). Over half (54 per cent) have booked three to five activities on their upcoming holidays, with 41 per cent prioritising cultural tours and excursions.
Commenting on the research, Alice Jong, Research and Insights Senior Analyst at Tripadvisor, said: ‘Summer may be over in the northern hemisphere, but travel demand continues momentum, with three quarters planning trips this autumn and almost half of these travellers planning to travel more than this time last year.
‘With around two in five looking to make the most of seasonal discounts as [the] cost of living continues to rise, the beginning of November is the most affordable time to visit some of the most popular destinations this season. [The] week of November 5 to November 11 is the most budget-friendly for travellers heading to London, Rome and New York City.’
