The ‘unspoiled’ Greek island only known to locals – that has beautiful beaches and Santorini-like houses | The Sun

A LITTLE-KNOWN Greek island has received glowing praise for its Santorini-like houses and its lack of crowds.

Greek hotspots like Santorini and Mykonos have become popular with tourists, leaving them to be both expensive and overcrowded as a result.

But not far from Santorini is a lesser-known spot that boasts similar architecture and natural beauty, all while remaining "unspoiled".

The Cycladic island of Anafi sits near the likes of Santorini and Ios, but is a lot less visited than Greece’s more well-known isles.

According to the Greek Reporter, "Anafi is a small Cycladic island near Santorini without the fame and glamour of its neighbour.

"Instead, it rewards visitors with its natural beauty, serenity, and warm hospitality."

While travel blogger, Santorini Secrets, added: "[There are] no tourists [on the island].

"There are lonely sandy beaches with crystal blue waters. There's also a truly unspoiled Chora with tavernas and cafes."

Chora is the island's main town, and has been likened to the popular Greek hotspot of Santorini.

The Greek Reporter added: "The view from Chora is much like the view from the Caldera in Santorini.

"What is really impressive, though, is the cleanliness of the narrow streets, the freshly painted houses, the quiet atmosphere, and the leisurely friendliness of the locals."

In the last few years, some holidaymakers have been heading to the Greek Island in a bid to "avoid mass tourism".

One of those holidaymakers is TikTok user, Laurine Garcia, who is known as laurinegabi on the social media platform.

Earlier this year, she posted a video all about her recent visit to the island.

The footage showed white houses nestled on a hilltop, and beaches covered with stretches of golden sand.

One reason people don’t visit it as much as the other islands is the fact it doesn’t have its own airport.

However, the island can be reached by ferry from Athens, with around four departures per week during the summer months.

Ferry journeys from Athens take up to 12 hours, but Anafi can also be accessed by boat services from Santorini, Naxos, and Paros.

There's only one village on the island of Anafi, and that's the main town of Chora, which overlooks the ocean.

Anafi is home to 11 beaches including Kleisidi Beach, Roukounas Beach, Agios Nikolaos Beach, and Katsouni Beach.

Other activities include visiting the Monastery of Kalamiotissa, the Church of Agios Spyridon, and doing a spot of shopping on the island.

There are several accommodation options on the island including hotels and holiday homes.

Holidaymakers can stay at the Apollon Village Hotel for £95 per night based on two people sharing a room.

And Anafi isn't the only Greek island that's been compared to Santorini in recent years.

The island of Folegandros is often explored by Greek holidaymakers who are looking to avoid the crowds/
