Is the L'Oreal Wonder Water worth the faff?

L’Oreal’s Wonder Water liquid conditioner is being dubbed the new Olaplex – a fan favourite used to protect hair from chemical damage.

Whether you’ve coloured your hair or not, L’Oreal’s new offering boasts a hair transformation that apparently takes eight seconds.

A promise of such speed obviously had to be tested. So I tried out the new Wonder Water to see how just wondrous it is.

Before I tell you how it went, you should know what kind of hair I have as the amount of doses recommended depends on your hair type.

I have wavy/curly hair which is often dry, as curlier hair doesn’t lock in moisture the same way as straight hair.

So when I was offered a super easy-to-use treatment (that doesn’t require wrestling to squeeze out a standard conditioner), I was all game.

Here’s how it went.

What is the L’Oreal Wonder Water?

Wonder Water is a new rinse-out hair treatment by L’Oreal Paris Elvive.

It is a damaged hair treatment that is said to work on multiple hair types from fine to curly, but ideal for long hair that’s damaged, dry or frizzy.

The product is powered by lamellar water technology, an ultra-lightweight treatment that penetrates water cuticles and targets damaged areas.

The liquid conditioner formula is said to leave hair ten times smoother in a matter of seconds.

It gets its name as it is completely transparent and looks like water.

L’Oreal states: ‘Wonder Water is the next generation of hair deep conditioners and treatments as it has a breakthrough ultra-lightweight formula powered by Lamellar Water technology.

‘Moisturising agents and amino acids target dry, damaged areas of hair, forming thin layers called lamella to smooth the hair surface and visibility transform lengths in just eight seconds. Hair is silkier, shinier and healthier-looking with an unbelievably weightless feel.’

Faff involved

You can use Wonder Water as a replacement for your standard conditioner or use it as a step in-between shampoo and conditioner.

It has a small nozzle so you can simply point and squeeze it towards where you want it.

Use one dose for fine to medium textured hair, and two to three doses for thick to curly textured hair, add one more dose if you have extra-long hair.

Apply directly to wet hair on the lengths only, avoiding the scalp. Massage for eight seconds and rinse out. Use a conditioner after if needed.

I didn’t blow dry or use a diffuser on my hair afterwards but the folks at L’Oreal encourage using a hair dryer for shinier results.

Results

I’ve used the Wonder Water twice now, the first time as a replacement for conditioner and the second in addition.

Both times, the product got to work immediately. As with other conditioners, you can feel the hair get softer as you wash it off, but with Wonder Water, the softness comes almost immediately.

The liquid conditioner also smells great.

The Wonder Water is easier to apply than normal conditioners as you can squirt it where you want and it comes out easily.

It was easy to apply and wash out whereas with ordinary conditioner sometimes it can make your hair feel greasy if you don’t wash it all out properly.

I also had blackseed oil in my hair (as I say, my hair is often dry) before I washed it out and the Wonder Water took it all out effectively without applying too much or leaving it greasy.

I’m not sure if the end result was that it was softer and sleeker than other counterparts but it did feel like it got to work faster.

Thought it added a softness, my curls weren’t as refined with Wonder Water as they are with other products.

I wouldn’t give up standard conditioners because I prefer using the stuff to scrunch up my hair (which helps my curls) rather than apply a liquid conditioner which doesn’t require the same work.

It’s definitely one I might use for when I’m in a rush though.
