Your guide to celeb makeup lines – and what's actually worth buying

Nobody knows more about pouting than Victoria Beckham. So who better to launch a gloss that promises to really shine?

It’s the latest in a makeup range that has impressed critics since 2019, and also features her first collection of eyeshadow palettes, eyeliners and shadow pots.

Indeed, celebrity makeup ranges are the new go-to when it comes to beauty. And according to top makeup artist Virna Midgley, the stars are well placed to develop products.

‘Celebrities learn technique, texture and application, and they put it all together and come up with great products,’ says Midgley. ‘Over the months and years, they learn what works best for them, and they’ve probably mixed a few different techniques, which is exactly what I do.’

Midgley — who has worked with names such as Pixie Lott, Amy Hart and Alexandra Burke — adds: ‘Trinny’s Blur fills in lines beautifully, while I love Victoria Beckham’s soft kohl eyeliners. Beckham doesn’t cut corners — she uses good-quality pigment in her eyeshadow. Meanwhile, Rihanna’s range of skin foundations are excellent, while her eyebrow set is fantastic value and comes in different shades.

‘These celebrities have thought about their products. Their trials and errors — combined with backing, research and expert resources — have created fantastic ranges.

‘Try Beckham’s moisturiser — it’s incredible and leaves your skin supple and pliable. A great base for makeup.’

Beckham announced in 2019 that she had launched her £26 Future Lash Mascara because ‘I was tired of my mascara being unable to keep up — always smudging, flaking or harming lashes’. She added: ‘To create my own, I wanted to reimagine what I needed from the ground up.’

Beckham’s newest product, Posh Gloss, a lip-plumping, line-smoothing crystal-clear gloss, promises 1970s shine while gently moisturising as it’s worn. With a price tag of £24, it’s a premium product but the latest in a line that has won praise for key ingredients, clever product development and coveted styling.

Beckham will be happy if she matches the financial success of Rihanna, who this year became a billionaire on the back of her Fenty brand. Rihanna netted a cool $1.4 billion thanks to bestsellers including her Pro Filt’r foundation (£27).

Even American star Drew Barrymore is in on the act, creating Flower and launching a lip mask in one shimmering shade, Lucky, with a similar texture to lip gloss.

Meanwhile, the younger market flocked to Selena Gomez’s Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight — a product Midgley describes as ‘a great buildable highlighter that is perfect for younger skins and fantastic to work with’.

And that’s not all. Trinny Woodall made her name as a TV presenter and style expert but is enjoying new-found fame thanks to her £26 Miracle Blur, a lip and line filler primer that’s sold out five times since launch. Versatility seems the key to its success — it can be worn alone or under/over makeup, and simply ‘melts’ into fine lines, smoothing skin in the process.

And if that’s not enough, there’s model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (below), who has teamed up with makeup guru Caroline Hadfield to launch Collection One into Space NK — a range including concealer for £23, brow enriched shaping gel at £19.50 and Radiant Reveal Brightening Serum, £53 (£27 travel size).
